Need help choosing between second gen and third gen Ryzen

I found deals on local online stores where I could get a ryzen 7 2700X and a ryzen 5 3600X for the exact same price. 

Which one should I choose?

3600/x is better in most cases unless the workload is purely multi threaded.

workload? what cpu do you already have? and what about the 3600 (non x)?

way better yes. 

as  said unless the task is purely multi threaded. the 3600/x is better.

It costs about 40$ less

3600x - 260$

3600   -220$

yea definitely  get the non x. the performance difference is so little, if any and you can get the same clocks that the x has by enabling pbo anyways.

precision boost, basically an auto overclock that you can enable in the bios.
