Will a b450 motherboard be able to handle a 4000 series cpu?

My friend has a msi R5 2600/b450i gaming plus ac sytem he's waiting for the newer cpus before the upgrade, will he need to save up for a new motherboard or will a bios update do?

It'll probably get Zen 3 compatibility with a no-going-back beta BIOS.

i mean, amd did say that b450 can support zen 3, it's down to the vendors though if they want to release a beat bios for it. 

PC: Motherboard: ASUS B550M TUF-Plus, CPU: Ryzen 3 3100, CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34, GPU: GIGABYTE WindForce GTX1650S, RAM: HyperX Fury RGB 2x8GB 3200 CL16, Case, CoolerMaster MB311L ARGB, Boot Drive: 250GB MX500, Game Drive: WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD.

 

Peripherals: GK61 (Optical Gateron Red) with Mistel White/Orange keycaps, Logitech G102 (Purple), BitWit Ensemble Grey Deskpad. 

 

Audio: Logitech G432, Moondrop Starfield, Mic: Razer Siren Mini (White).

 

Phone: Pixel 3a (Purple-ish).

You can Upgrade the BIOS to be compatible with the 4000 Series CPUs, but it makes irreversible changes, so you cant Downgrade the BIOS if you want to use the previous generations. Some Motherboard Manufacturers support that for the 3000 Series CPUs.

 

This is due to too less space for more CPU compatability in the BIOS.

other then the b550s there won't be any more new boards alongside with the 4000 series right ?

We don't know. Though they'll probably release like an x670 chipset or something like that. But we obviously don't and can't know.

Obviously no one would know.

For the Ryzen 4000 series just go for B550 if you want better VRM, reliable system and save your time to make that BIOS stuff but that would cost you more.
