Dark Souls Remastered: Knight lautrec is not in his cell

So, whilst I was replaying Dark Souls Remastered, i notice the Lautrec is not in his cell and when i searched up how, it said it is not a bug but never explained why he does not show up. So if you can, please may can someone explain why he is not there for me.

If you defeat the gargoyle before freeing him he will escape the cell by himself. If you go back to firelink shrine he should be there.
