Upgrading my gaming/uni rig

Hi guys i hope this is the correct place to post this.

Im looking into upgrading my current gaming/studies pc from an i5 4670k and 16gb ddr3 to a amd ryzen based system.

I play a bunch of AAA titles as well as some indie games. Im studying mechanical engineering so i will be working with flow and stress simulations in Siemens nx 12 next year.

The delema im stuck with though is weather i should go for a 2700x with 8gb 3200mhz klevv ram or a 1600af with 16gb 3200mhz vengence rgb. There is only a small price difference between the 2 and i dont know if 8gb is enough. i could upgrade the 2700x to 16gb but the ram would run at 2666mhz.

My question basically is should a take the 1600, save a bit of of money and upgrade the cpu in a few years or should a go for the 2700x to "futureproof" myself and look at the ram in a year or so(if option 2 please recommend a ram choice).

Thanks in advance for all your advice!

So I see that you are basically just looking at different bundles. If possible, wait two months for the Ryzen 4000 series to launch for Desktop which should hopefully give you a lot more cores for your buck which is helpful for your workload.

That was my plan originally but there is a rumor going around saying they the are shutting down due to the pandemic and some tax stuff. Hence the R3000 discount on those bundles. Any recommendations on those bundles i posted?

Well here were my thoughts on it. It took a little detective work (looking at the domain name to figure out that .za means south africa and converting from rand to usd), that it's not awesome prices compared to what I would consider to be a good deal in the US. Really the differences between them come down to the memory and the CPU, in which the CPU matters much more than the memory. I would go for the second one that you linked, with 8gb of RAM, but only if the memory comes in two sticks so you can run it in dual channel. If you only get 1x8 stick of RAM, you are leaving performance on the table.

But again, if at all possible wait for Ryzen 4000 to launch so that you can get a better CPU for the same money.

Thanks dude ill remember to add region and conversion rates in my future posts. Yes i agree those prices are not very good but we pay import tax on tech somewhere in the high 40% range and  from my shopping arround even amazon is more expencive after i add import taxes and shipping :(. But thanks for the advice, ill make sure to order 2x4gb sticks.

one thing would be getting a 3300x, also instead of the 2700x get a 3600.

ram is also quite cheap, you can get 3000MHz kits not much more than 3200MHz 8GB

Main PC [The Rig of Theseus]:

CPU: i5-8600K @ 5.0 GHz | GPU: GTX 1660 | RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3000 MHz | Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic | PSU: Corsair RM 650i | SSD: Corsair MP510 480 GB |  HDD: 2x 6 TB WD Red| Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro | OS: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations

Secondary PC [Why did I bother]:

CPU: AMD Athlon 3000G | GPU: Vega 3 iGPU | RAM: 8 GB DDR4 3000 MHz | Case: Corsair 88R | PSU: Corsair VS 650 | SSD: WD Green M.2 SATA 120 GB | Motherboard: MSI A320M-A PRO MAX | OS: Windows 11 Pro for Workstations

Server [Solution in search of a problem]:

Model: HP DL360e Gen8 | CPU: 1x Xeon E5-2430L v1 | RAM: 12 GB DDR3 1066 MHz | SSD: Kingston A400 120 GB | OS: VMware ESXi 7

Server 2 electric boogaloo [A waste of electricity]:

Model: intel NUC NUC5CPYH | CPU: Celeron N3050 | RAM: 2GB DDR3L 1600 MHz | SSD: Kingston UV400 120 GB | OS: Debian Bullseye

Laptop:

Model: ThinkBook 14 Gen 2 AMD | CPU: Ryzen 7 4700U | RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz | OS: Windows 11 Pro

Photography:

Cameras:

Full Frame digital: Sony α7

APS-C digital: Sony α100

Medium Format Film: Kodak Junior SIX-20

35mm Film:

Lenses:

Sony SAL-1870 18-70mm ƒ/3.5-5.6

Sony SAL-75300 75-300mm ƒ/4.5-5.6

Meike MK-50mm ƒ/1.7

PSA: No, I didn't waste all that money on computers, (except the main one) my server cost $40, the intel NUC was my old PC (although then it had 8GB of ram, I gave the bigger stick of ram to a person who really needed it), my laptop is used and the second PC is really cheap.

I like tinkering with computers and have a personal hatred towards phones and everything they represent (I daily drive an iPhone 7, or a 6, depends on which one works that day)

If possible I would not buy the bundle. X470 is a waste of money. If prices are right in your region, a B450 or B550 board with a 2700X or 3600 and a 2x8GB kit should work out better. An Asrock Pro4 B450 with a 2700X and then either 1x8gb stick with the intention of buying another very soon would work.

Also, if gaming performance is what your after, 3600 is best, or 3300X if you need something cheaper.

The b550 boards we have here atm are pretty expencive compared to the x470. Im just worried that if i go with the b450 ill loose an upgrade path to ryzen 4000 series. As far as i know only the 500 series boards are officially supporting them burt im pretty sure the x470 series will get a bios update, the b450 im a little sceptical about. As for the cpu options if i go 3600 i pay about 50% more than the bundels i listed. The plan was to go 3300x but SA only has 3100 for now.
