4K 120hz gaming rig help

Budget (including currency): $3000 (would prefer to be around $2500 if possible)

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Hitman 2, Outer Wilds, Borderlands 3, Everspace, various low graphical intensity games.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): will be running 4K at 100-120hz, my main issue right now is I'm stuck between two very similarly priced builds.

either will be overclocked and im considering dropping down to the non-XT 3600 to save money for the ryzen 4000 CPUs, which would do better for my money for 4K gaming?

my pronouns are they/them

Are you able to wait for Zen3 and Ampere?

depends on the launch timing. im trying to get this done by the end of the year but i can save the cpu and gpu for last since the mobo will be compatible.

AMD build is better, in my opinion. There's no price listed for the 5600XT, but I wouldn't recommend paying more for the XT on the end, alone. You're only looking at like 100-200mhz additional, and you just won't notice it.

As far as overclocking goes, you're not getting much off of either chip. Zen 2 does a better job at overclocking itself than you're going to be able to achieve manually, and Intel's 10th gen 14nm+++++++++++ (or whatever), is so highly micro-optimized at this point, that it also doesn't have much headroom left. Temper your expectations here, and plan as if you're not going to be able to overclock.

Zen 3 is supposed to be a massive jump up, so it would definitely behoove you to wait on that if you can, but that also may add additional cost to your build.

I'm now pretty certain that im going for an x570 mobo so if the zen 3 launch is delayed ill just get a 3600 and get whatever the best gaming zen 3 chip is when it drops, that hundred or so bucks for a good backup cpu is well worth it and a fine holdover. my main concern was if i would be bottlenecking my system at 4k with less stable frame times and lower clocks.

At 4K, you're entirely GPU bound. The card isn't going to be able to send enough frames to significantly tax even a lower end AMD chip like a 3100.

This is why CPU reviews even for things like a 3900X throw in a 2080 Ti and run it at 1080p. You have to seriously push some FPS to notice any significant difference in CPU performance.
