Can anyone please help to understand? MB specs

Hey there, I tried to read hundreds of forums, and explanation in regard to the specs regard to PCIe connectors, and I did understood most part of it, but it still bugs me in some point. 

I will be very glad, if anyone, could explain in simple words, the specs of the next MB as example. 

 

1.    Multi-GPU SLI/CFX support 2 x PCIe 3.0 x 16 (No need to explain that  - just mean that support to GPU and will run at full x16 which is physical connectors)  "You can correct me if I am wrong. "

2.   (supports x16, x8/x8, x8/x4+x4) This part I am not sure I understand. if it support x16  why also add this part? 

3.   1 x PCIe 3.0 x 16 (Max. at x4 mode) " Not sure if i get it right - 1 more PCie but that have only x4 physical connectors? 

So in total 3 x16 PCie connectors.

 And    3 x PCIe 3.0 x 1  ??

 

Is that right?

 

The next part, I have no idea how to understand. 

It said support PCIe 3.0 x4 mode. so max speed ? 

2 x M.2 Socket 3
・ 1 x Type 2242-2280, supports SATA & PCIe 3.0 x 4 mode
・ 1 x Type 2242-22110, supports PCIe 3.0 x 4 mode

 

There are some more stuff, like if you use one M.2 slot, so second will be disabled, or some other location. 

Any way, sorry for my miserable English, and thx in advance.

Motherboard manufacturers are not very good at distinguishing between the physical slot size and the electrical wiring of it.

If the only the first slot is filled, it will run at full x16. If both slots are used, the x16 link gets split into two x8 links. The first slot is still physically x16, and electrically x16. The second slot is (usually) electrically x8 (doesn't have the PCB traces for x16) but still in a physical x16 slot (mainly for support and the lock).

 

If all three slots are filled, the top is x8, and the rest split the (already split) x8 to x4/x4. The last slot is (probably) only electrically x4, but again, in a physical x16 slot.

The x4 slot and the x1 slots may share bandwidth, so some x1 slots may be disabled if you use the full x4 bandwidth.

Its telling you what the CPU capable of doing, and thus how the mobo is wired to work.

 

If you ONLY put a single GPU in the system, the top x16 slot (which is where you should put it) will run at gen 3 x16 speeds. If you add another card (GPU, sound card, usb card) of any sort fo another CPU controlled PCIe slot, the main GPU slot will drop to x8, and the other card will run at max of x8 as well.

 

The other slots are controlled by your chipset (Z390 chipset). The chipset has a single Gen 3.0 x4 link to the CPU, and that is how the other 16x, 1x, and m.2's are routed. 

 

Its a bit confusing, but that is why its listed that way.

What that means is that if you use only one of these slots, both are capable of x16 each ONLY.
