Spotify to no longer work with Digtial DJ software

Summary

Spotify will no longer allow the functionality within DJ apps to stream music directly to DJ software. The concept of streaming music to DJ sets was a game changer, allowing to build DJ sets on  the fly dependent on the crowds input and expand to include requests of music that they may not have in the immediate collection.

Spotify will no longer work with third-party DJ apps starting on July 1st, 2020. The news was posted by Algoriddim, the developer behind a popular DJ software for iOS called Djay. A Spotify representative confirmed the news to The Verge.

“As of July 1, 2020 Spotify will no longer be playable through 3rd party DJ apps,” reads Algoriddim’s announcement. “You’ll still be able to use Spotify in Djay until the end of June 2020. In the meantime, we’ve introduced new streaming services that will enable you to continue mixing all of the great music you love, plus give you extended access to new content and features.”

My thoughts

This was always a pretty grey area, as using spotify for commercial use was dicey at best (plus streaming music while djing live with them was a receipe for disaster).  But was very useful for DJs as a means to include Songs in their sets that they think as spur of the moment additions, and allow for a great volume of music due to not having to buy each song seperatey (crazily most fo the digital musci stores have T&C's saying not for commerical use as well).

While Spotify's music catalogue is not prefect, it allowed for more source material than say, a record pool or a certain genre

New services to step in and fill the gaps include Soundcloud Go+ and Tidal

This is something everyone should have seen coming from the start.

All companies are moving away from your owning the content, you are streaming the content, basically renting it under whatever restrictions they choose to have.

well...yeah, that makes sense.

I'm of the belief that any DJ should have all their music on hand, there's no guarantee of an internet connection to be able to stream music if you're playing at a gig professionally

Beatport is kinda made for this, at least for dance music DJs. Wedding party DJs not so much. Also, I'd assume you'd download the track before playing rather than risk leaving yourself at the mercy of Wifi gods?

Yeah, most DJs working with digital files will have USB sticks (often including backup copies) loaded with their tracks.  Streaming would either be a backup for that or something for amateur DJs to help practice their craft at home.
