i9 9900k or i7 10700k

Warin

I am trying to decide on whether or not to upgrade my current system by replacing my i5 8th gen  CPU with an i9 9900k, or whether I should go all out and buy a new motherboard and the i7 10700k. This solution would be a little pricier and offer slightly better performance according to the benchmarking that I can find.

I like that the i9 would just drop into my existing system. I also like that it is a significantly lower TDP. But I do recognize that the LGA1151 platform is pretty much at the end of the line.

What do others think?

I'd wait as ryzen refresh is around the corner and ryzen 3 (4000) is supposed to come this year too.

AMD 4th gen or the 3700x. It's seriously not worth getting Intel chips. If you're thinking about a new motherboard just go with a 3700x or the next-gen 4700x which probably will release in ~6 months. Still stomps on intel in terms of pricing and performance closely follows for single core, and basically surpasses multi-core. Also comes with a decent cooler in the box.

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

ignore these tdp numbers, some of these chips will use double the tdp in normal usage

Can you get a 9900k cheap? If so go for it, else, Id probalby wait a bit.

The TDP on these chips is pretty much nonsense, if you're going to remove the turbo limit. The 9900K will pull around 160W at its stock 4.7GHz boost, and the 10700K probably around the same, or very slightly more. The 10700K will also run a good bit cooler than the 9900K.

As others have suggested above, I'd wait for Zen 3 to come out and make a decision then.

I can't disagree with anything that's been said.  I was just thinking about pulling the trigger in the next few days.

Waiting will also mean that more B550 boards will make it to retailers as well.
