Should i get an ssd as a boot drive and a hard drive for games, or just get less storage and buy an ssd for everything i have a $130 budget for storage

I'd get a 1TB SSD now, grab a 2TB+ HDD when that starts to fill up and you can move your games over.

This is one of the best $/GB options and it has DRAM cache.

Its rough a lot of people are saying that games will require much faster IO with future generations. But in all honestly most of those suggestions aren't based on any real information. Any game that's completely bottlenecked by IO likely wouldn't come to PC anyways.

Spend 70$ on a 500+ GB SSD of decent quality ( WD SN550 , WD Blue 500 GB, others from Adata, Corsair, Intel , Crucial, Samsung etc).

Save 20-30$ more and get a 3-4 TB mechanical drive for around 70-90$

Going for 1 TB SSD makes sense, as it's cheaper per GB ... you can get good 1 TB ssds for 90-110$

Probably yes, depends on how many games you realistically need installed at the same time. I'd try to avoid using HD at all for game storage these days. If 1TB runs out later on, you can always get more SSD then. The only time I'd use HD is for storing non-performance bulk data, e.g. videos, music, photos.

Well, you do the math, how would I know what games you're playing, how you're playing games and so on ?

 

Reserve 100 GB for the operating system and some programs, and you're left with 800 GB of space for games. The average AAA game size these days is 40-60 GB, with older games in the 8-20 GB... new games like Call of duty whatever or red dead redemption may be up to 150-200 GB in size.  

So those 800 GB maybe be enough for up to 15-20 x 40 GB games, or 50 x 10-25 GB games.... how many games do you plan to have installed at the same time? How many games are you gonna switch between within a week?

 

If you have a high speed connection, you could afford to download a game again every week or every couple of weeks when you're in the mood, and delete it to make room for others when done.

Also, you can MOVE the game to a mechanical drive to make room for the games you actively play and want them to load faster on SSD... Steam allows you to move games between steam libraries (folders that are inon different drives)

 

So 1 TB is absolutely perfect and enough for START,  you can build a pc and install A FEW games you're most interested in, and it will last you a few weeks until you can afford to get more money and add a mechanical drive to the build.
