yes I am going for a new build, new ram, motherboard, power supply and everything.

But I have no idea what to do with the core 2 duo?

It is not possible to throw it away, so is there any way to use it?

i mean.

the only thing i can think of would be keeping the old pc and just downloading spotify on it and hooking up a pair of speakers and using it for spotify.

but that's such an unnessecary task for a computer, since it also requires a monitor and there are better solutions for that, much better.

but i can't find any other use for it

My father said he will spend any amount of money on my old desktop pc, but will not throw away core 2 duo. He says he bought it for about 200 dollars (about 15,000 rupees in india) so he will not leave it. Can anybody recommand me a way to make it  a  blender editing build or atleast a 4K video editing build?

Also,  my old pc specs :

Core 2 Duo, 2 GB (has another 2GB slot empty), zebronics g31 motherboard, no graphics card.

spending 200$ on a 2 core cpu either means he got sharked like anything i've ever seen, or he bought it a long time ago.

you  can get a ryzen 5 1600 with 6 cores 12 threads for 150$ (that's buying a brand new one on amazon).

but as mentioned by tofu, it probably won't happen

Okay. My father says that he can buy a 3900x for me, but he said I have to make use of this old cpu in some or the other way.

Do you know if we can do anyting with this old cpu?

He bought it when I was born... very old one.

That's why I want an upgrade. What else do you want in detail? Please say me

i'm trying to think of any use.

but it's just too slow for almost any task that a normal user could need a cpu for.

yes it's a bad deal, should have mentioned that. but just to showcase that since we don't know when he bought it for 200$ it might have been a very bad purchase.

Wait, he won't part with a Core 2 Duo cuz it cost him $200 a decade or more ago but he'll just up and buy a 3900X like that?

Can you fill in the rest of the blanks here, like a budget for the build?

if you get a 3900x you need a new motherboard. and more ram (newer ram too)

and you'd need a dedicated graphics card since the 3900x doesn't have integrated graphics

A Core 2 Duo can still handle regular internet usage as long as it has the RAM and graphics card to back it up.  You could keep the old PC with that CPU around for running legacy programs on occasion, or you could use it as a media streaming PC hooked up to a TV.  It may not be able to handle 4K, but it'll work fine for 1080p.

I use my old https://techable.com/apple/specs/imac-2-0-ghz-core-2-duo-20-inch-aluminum/

As purely for browsing and discord. it has a core 2 duo mobile chip in it.

Works fine, had 1GB ram first, upgraded to 4GB... and replaced the HDD with SSD.. Now it is an okay browsing machine

Retro gaming? Box cutter? Drill through it and use it as a keychain? Sharpen the edges and make it into a throwing weapon? Seriously though, I have a 1080p HTPC in my bedroom powered by an E8500.

A $200 CPU that lasts 14 years is a worthwhile investment. It's also a 14-year-old CPU. In chicken years, that's like a billion years old. Most chickens are slaughtered at six weeks. With 52 weeks in a year, there are 8.66 generations of chicken in any given year. Multiply that by 14 years and you've got 121 generations of chicken. A chicken born tomorrow would have had 120 direct ancestor generations since that C2D went into use. I think you've gotten your money's worth. Time to move on to a CPU that's designed to be functional for editing in 2020.

as skillz said. it can also be used for discord chatting and other small stuff.

but if  your dad is going to buy you a pc that's got parts with a similar pricetag to the 3900 your normal pc could easily do that.

I have heard it is fairly easy to make a media server from older pc, using VLC or similar.  Not just play spotify, though that is a use, but to set up to play movies in the lving rm or in any room in the house over a good network.  Then those movies aren't clogging your new computer setup. You could even set it to be a NAS type backup storage.  That wouldn't need speed or a fast video card to still be useful.  Whatever you decide, good luck!
