If you absolutely insist on using that thing, throw in a $20 SSD and put a light Linux distro on it.

Oh, yeah.  I also did this when I installed Windows 10 on an old laptop.

As far as I can find it lacks certain instruction sets windows 10 needs to even allow an install. So no.

It will "work", yes. It could run on my shitty tablet with 2GB of RAM after all.
But it won't be the best experience though. Far from it.

I would rather suggest Linux instead. Like Mint Cinnamon, Pop! OS or Ubuntu.

There's a Hanna Montana distro too. It's linux so basically your imagination is the limit at that point.

He doesn't need to be experienced in Linux. Something like Mint with Cinnamon DE is super easy to learn and use. ChromeOS is another option. Anything instead of Windows; it will chug on that poor little laptop.

the exact opposite from what everyone who uses linux insists

I think almost any version of windows will be  probably preferable.

If he installs Arch he will need to learn how to use Linux. But if OP is smart and installs Mint or something that is super easy to use, ready to go, has a Windows-like DE, etc, it isn't hard to learn at all.

I still think Linux or ChromeOS is the best option for it.

It's honestly better to just get a 50$ laptop from ebay with a first gen core i3 at this point. That thing will not be usable. What will your dad do on it? Browsing the web is basically out of the question.

Agreed, ChromeOS is waaaay underrated for weak/old machines like this, or for grandma who just needs a PC to check Facebook and her email. Highly recommend OP checks it out.

SSD is the only thing you should buy for this machine. RAM won't make a difference, that CPU is shit.

SSD + ChromeOS or light Linux distro. Either that, or a new machine.
