Github changes branching terminology.

Daily reminder that slavery is/was a human problem, not a black/US problem. Black people in the US are not from the only slaves that ever existed and every race has been enslaved. Another daily reminder that this master/slave terminology is used in every country that isn't the US as well, just translated.

Black people in the US need to stop thinking that literally any mention of the word slave is a racial injustice or somehow related to them in any way. I say this as a person of black heritage, not that being black makes your opinion on slavery as a concept more or less valid.

I dont really care about Github in particular but if this becomes a trend it's going to get silly really fast. Master/slave is a very accurate way of way denoting that one object controls the second (identical or close enough) object without the second object being able to control the first object or receive instructions from anything other than the first object. We wont be able to just switch over to "main" for most things and what's the replacement word for the slave, backup? that's not gonna work chief

Totally, slavery is still an issue everywhere, but this specifically is more of a case of a white person choosing for black people, and apparently it's making people uncomfortable AND could potentially be considered a breaking change.

This is github dev's 'pros' list on twitter.

And to be honest, I don't think most black people here (in the US) think the word slave only applies to them, but that conversation doesn't belong here.

Git itself seems to potentially have a better solution to this imaginary issue: just ask the user to name the head branch when running 'git init'.

It will also mean all those kung-fu masters in various movies will now be renamed to kung-fu mains.

Dumbest thing ever. Who else got slavery flashbacks when installing IDE drive where you had to set secondary drive as SLAVE and the first drive was MASTER? Yeah, no one fucking ever. This dumb catering to overly sensitive perpetually triggered people is idiotic. Go and solve actual inequalities or real social problems, not manufactured outrage on things that are just words with no real hateful meaning.

I'd honestly love to see some real, actual statistics on how many non-white techies have ever been offended or felt uneasy from the use of terms like whitelist, blacklist, master and slave in the context of programming or electronics. So far I haven't seen one, single tweet or comment from a non-white person to that effect, but I've seen plenty of tweets and comments calling this whole thing idiotic. Heck, one black dev said he's now feeling uncomfortable and uneasy, because he had never even thought about such idiotic connotations, but now he won't be able to forget about it because of this white-knighting mess!
