FX 8320 Overclocked with (almost) passive cooling+ VRM mod

samuel

Check my specs in the signature.
This is what I did:
Removed VRM heatsinc, applied thermal compound and threw away that crappy pad.
Attached the stock cooler's fan (with silcon pads glued to it for reduced vibrations) to the heatsinc using some RJ45 wires. It was tricky.
Installed the Thermaright Cooler with push-pull. It fitted just fine, second fan slightly rised so it will not suffocate the VRM cooler I made before.
The small stock fan is connected to the only 4 pin my motherboard has beside CPU fan header.
Using speedfan, I made this fan control profile:

Temp 3 is the CPU socket temp, wich is fine up to 70 degreeds. It stays off almost all the time even when gaming. (It's a bit cold in here.) At 40-50 degreeds it's spinning but it's not audible. Perfect for a cooling that small heatsinc.
The push-pull config is wired by a splitter and uses motherboard's  fan header. I set it to start at 45 degreeds and 100%@55. They stay off all the time. (even when doing video transcoding but not IBT and prime95).
I'm not an heavy OC addict. I'm really happy with what my CPU can do at the clock you find below.
By default, my motherboard throtles the CPU even at stock clock. This is AMD AMP Power management in action wich bth sucks. I'm pretty damn sure I don't touch 95W TDP at even at my own clocks. (The CPU is heavily undervolted.) It can be disabled in bios.

The temp in this graph is temp3-> socket temp. Perfectly safe to set it this way.
Create a task schedule. Set speedfan.exe and etcall.exe (C:\Program Files (x86)\GIGABYTE\ET6\etcall.exe) to start at login with admin rights. Etcall starts the fan controler only and it's minimised, you don't need that crapy easytune anymore. You can also set speedfan to start minimised.
That's it. Aaaand some fun with the stock fan (wich you cannot see it, but you will FEEL it! lol)
Hint: 7200 rpm, not a HDD!

Stock coolers - The sound of bare minimum

what do you mean by "bare minimum"?

what do you mean by "bare minimum"?

Bare minimum is something that is good enough, it does what is needed but others do it better and possibly have something extra.

So the sound of stock coolers remind me how everything in my rig is bare minimum.

Though I no longer have the stock cooler.
