I spent two days in my attic for this...

Probably too paranoid.  If they are getting that close that they can cut the wire, they could just as easily spray paint over the lens or smash the camera.

The cameras themselves represent a target for theft. Even if you have footage, there isn't a guarantee the perp will be found.

Linus' installation is not representative of an ideal deployment, for sure. At the end of the video he basically says as much, but many will not be paying that much attention by then. The cameras should be out of reach of someone standing on the ground, have the wires completely concealed (because the design allows for it easily), and be in far less obvious locations, especially for the highest quality, and thus most expensive cameras.

What is the storage solution that's best for unifi? I can't tell if he's storing to an unraid box or if there's a separate product that is integrated.

Based purely on his comment about Unifi Protect, I asume he uses the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus with some form of internal HDD storage as Unifi Protect does not support NAS storage. If he uses NAS storage he could be using the Unifi Video software installed on an unraid VM or something like that.

On the other hand, he could also use the camera's via some other 3rd party software/appliance.

Ubiquiti makes a 4 bay NVR that works with Protect.  You can also run it, like Linus, on their UDM-Pro or through a gen 2 cloud key.

Works great on the UDM-P.  I'm running 8 cameras currently and will be adding their doorbell once it's out of EA.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello fellow LTTers!

I'm Anthony, but you can call me Dizz. I'm 33 and due to a genetic disease, I've been severely physically disabled since birth. I was not expected to live to see my second birthday, yada yada, but here I am.

I live with my fiancée and grandparents on close to 1.5 acres. We have wanted to setup some security cameras and expand the Wi-Fi range to cover the property for a few years now. I came across this video from Linus Tech Tips when it was posted about two weeks ago, and his setup looked ideal for my situation. The issue is, although I'm decently tech-savvy, that isn't an area I know a lot about. In addition, my fiancée and grandparents aren't technologically inclined.

What I need some assistance with is two fold. First, I need some help figuring out exactly what equipment I would need to accomplish this project. Secondly, I'm obviously unable to install any of the hardware, and my family isn't really in a situation to do so either. Therefore, I'm going to need some advice on where to turn to find a company or person with the requisite knowledge and expertise to install and setup the system.

For reference, my Internet connection is 1 Gbps / 20 Mbps.

I'm also assuming that Ubiquity is the brand I want to go with, but I'm only basing this off this LTT video. I'm not familiar with other brands or options that are available, but I am definitely a fan of paying for everything upfront and avoiding any monthly/annual fees. Also, my fiancée and I are fine with using our devices to monitor the camera feeds, but my grandparents would prefer to have a monitor that has all the feeds displayed whenever they want to check. If you have knowledge of setting up a smart security system or expanding WiFi range over large areas,  please feel free to chime in.

Thank you all in advance for taking the time to read this post and sharing your knowledge and assistance.

-Dizz🍻

These cameras can be connected to Synology or Home Assistant
