It's probably a heavily used drive on the verge of dying, they haven't made VelociRaptors in years i thought.

All of the cheap hard drives like that are used.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

If I remember correctly, the only 1TB VelociRaptor drive came out in 2012 and I don't even think they make them anymore. I guess if you want an unique piece of tech, it's not a bad buy if it's new. If it's used... well just stay away from used Hard Drives in general.

Not really, 1TB of Harddrive space is usually ~$35, and it's not a normal drive. I'd get a WD Blue or Seagate Barracuda if you're not doing anything special with it.

I mean... if it's a new unit then it'll be alright. Definitely would be a piece of tech history being it's the last of the legendary VelociRaptor drives.

I mean about any crappy HDD can work for that. Though some games would benefit from a SSD. I have an OLD 1TB drive myself, been rock solid. ALSO WD I think has a 1TB SSD around the $100 mark if your friend wants fast storage. Other wise just buy a decently sized drive from one of the big HDD makers and call it a day.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

TB SSD?

I was looking at a WD Blue drive at one point for a game drive. I mean I think Samsung and Intel are still the TOP brands, but from the reviews it seems like WD is not to bad. Also keep in mind about an SSD will be better than a HDD.

I do think that does make a bit of difference. BUT with this being the age of SSD's, those drives are pretty much dead at this point.

It's not really going to be that much faster since it's still just a hard drive

Realistically how bad are loading times for games on an HDD ( i know it depends on the game ) but on average are they really that slow?

BTW, thanks for all the replies 🙂

Honestly not that bad, BUT 1TB SATA SSDs can be had for around $100 or less if you find them on sale. If your friend wants to cheap out, just look at a 7200 rpm drive, with a decent amount of cache. I think my Seagate drives have 64 Mb of Cache and Ive been using them for years. That being said, I have read recently that there are games that run like dog crap on HDD. So your friend will have to take the punches as they come.

From what I have seen HDD's don't really do much to ruin the gaming experience. Sure it might take a bit longer to load a level, but for the most part the game play is the same. If I had to choose a drive Id be likely to get a Seagate Barracuda only because Ive had good luck with Seagate. With WD I think their Black label drives are the ones that you want. But stick with WD or Seagate as they are pretty much the top two brand.

So a larger HDD cache is what would be best?  My knowledge is limited when it comes to storage.

Mine is 64 Mb and It seems to be fine. Just don't get one that has 8Mb of cache, because I have seen those drives as well. The most important thing is just getting a decent drive. The most important thing is to make sure its big enough for the games, LOL.

Loud, maybe, depends on the drive. Temps are not bad, though you stick many drives together it might cause an issue.

WD Black and Velociraptor run hot and loud. They need direct air flow to stay in safe temperature. I retired my 1TB Velociraptor 3 years ago.

Do they get that hot/loud just loading games?

Yes. I remember the WD Black idling at 55C and ran like 75C when transferring files without direct airflow and make tons of "tick tick tick' noise. The Velociraptor is a 10,000rpm drive. You definitely will hear it when it spins up.
