First ITX Build - Workstation and Editing - Looking for feedback

 Share

Budget (including currency): $2000 Canadian

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Everyday workstation, 4k Editing.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

I haven't settled on Adobe Premier or Davinci Resolve or Vegas Pro. I don't know any and need to learn one of them.

Hello Everyone,

I am dipping my toes into ITX building and 4k editing. Going to be fun! I am looking to build something that will last for a while. Any suggestions are always welcomed!

General questions:

Can I adequately cool the 3700x with the Noctua NH-L9i?

Given the hardware, what would be the best editing application choice. I don't know any and need to select which one to learn.

Davinci resolve has a free version, makes learning a bit easier to swallow with no up front cost associated.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k (won) - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G2 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Linux Proliant ML150 G6:

Dual Xeon X5560 - 24GB ECC DDR3 - GTX 750 TI - old Seagate 1.5TB HDD - dark mode Ubuntu (and Win7, cuz why not)

How many watts do I need? Seasonic Focus threadUserbenchmark (Et al.) is trash explained, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

You could if you used eco mode and didn't use PBO. I would recommend something with more CPU cooling ability like the Mcase N1, Streacom DA2, or NZXT H1. The stock cooler can't fit into the Node 202 which should be a sign that its inadvisable.

id stay away, get a tlc drive, those will really struggle with reads.

Id probably try to get a bigger cooler, its relaly not a great cooler, its just slim. I think they have some coolers that are a bit bigger but will fit fine.

I love a good ITX build! I personally would recommend a different case just based on experience, something like the Silverstone SG13 / Cooler Master Elite 110 is a better case IMO, better cooling support and more friendly with hardware support while remaining pretty well the same size in terms of litres. But something to consider if you want a compact build but also some nice TG in there as well would be the Phanteks Evolv Shift or Lian Li TU150.

Otherwise parts look good, I mean with B550 launch we may get the 'XT' R7 CPU's as well so time will tell. The only other thing 100% worth changing is the storage, Samsung, while a good brand, comes with an unnecessary price premium. I will overspend by $200+ on a motherboard but Samsung nand is not worth it. If you want a good high end NVME drive look at the WD black, and just something like a Crucial/Adata sata SSD, saving here may a lot for more GPU budget.

That said if you are waiting to wait for B550 you should also wait for the new Nvidia GPU's as well.

Wow...thanks for all the advice.

Initially, I wanted to build in the Sliger sm560, but it's way too expensive with the shipping to Canada.

I will take a look at the following case suggestions:

Mcase N1
Streacom DA2
NZXT H1
Silverstone SG13
Cooler Master Elite 110
Phanteks Evolv Shift
Lian Li TU150

I will switch the NVME and SSD out for something less expensive.

Regarding the MOBO, I don't have another CPU to install it in a B450/X470 and flash the board to accept a ryzen 3000 chip, so my hand is being forced into getting a B550 or X570. Any B450/X470 I have seen online says that you have to flash it and I have no way of doing that.
