Why has SLI support become so expensive?

So I have a asrock z170 extreme 4 motherboard(about £115 new at the time) from my 2016 build and I was looking to upgrade my rig but in looking for a new motherboard I was supprised to at the lack of SLI support. Every atx board had crossfire support but the cheapest bord with SLI support was £220 and asrocks cheapest board with SLI support what their Taichi Z490 board priced at £395 

 

Is this something to do with Nvidia or is is solely a motherboard manufacturers money making scheme?

it would not surprise me if nvidia charged some sort of extra fee like they did with g-sync.

SLI has not really made sense for some time now. I think they just want anyone who gets it to really know what they are getting into and not confuse people who think they can just plug a second GPU into their system and expect twice the performance.

I've heard the guy championing SLI within Nvidia have left the company and Nvidia is not very interested in SLI anymore as a result.

you would be correct. That person was Tom Peterson who left Nvidia to Intel.

I already have 2x gtx 1070's and I'm not planning on changing them at the time being so it does make sense to want a motherboard with SLI support

It doesn't. Sell them and get a 3070 in September or a 2070 Super now. It will yield better performance as most games are dropping SLI support entirely

It's creates more problems then it solves

SLi for gamign is a bad idea. they lack of support. sli is dying and that is why it is getting moire expensive overtime.

 

but for professional use/folding/boinc/ rendering/ modeling sli can become handy sometimes. but usually people just buy single 2080 ti/titan rtx/ rtx 8000 for those things.

Motherboard tier list. Tier A for overclocking 5950x. Tier B for overclocking 5900x, Tier C for overclocking 5800X. Tier D for overclocking 5600X. Tier F for 4/6 core Cpus at stock. Tier E avoid.

But still there is something in my brain that tells me that two GPU is better than one. Why can't AMD just make 5700 XT x2 like the x2 cards they once made in the past? Also some of those NV Link bridges are pretty. 😍

I don't really know how you got to have 2 gtx 1070s, but if you bought them both at the same time, it would've only made sense before the 1080ti came out and even then it was pretty expensive. If you bought a 1070 and got another one later on for cheap, than it makes more sense. That is the only thing I think SLI is good for, but it works so unreliable, that nvidia doesn't really want to support it anymore.

I was kinda hoping that the new DX12 multigpu modes would be really good, because than we could see GPU's strucktured a bit like ryzen CPU's with chiplets. But I think they would just be way to bandwidth limited...

Actually yes I did buy both at the same time for two different systems but when I no longer needed both systems I put both cards in my main system and gave the other one minus graphics card to someone else. 

 

I've never had issues with running sli and have found a huge performance boost in terms of framerate at 1440p with many of the games I play (mostly the dx12 ones). I probably will buy a rtx3000 card when it comes out, if the performance gains are to be believed, but that doesn't help me now does it? 

 

Anyway, 'do you think I wasted my money with 1070 sli setup' wasn't the subject of this thread. I asked if anyone knew why the lack of support for cheaper motherboards and the best I got were a few guesses and people telling me things I already knew.

The more mainstream something is, the cheaper it is for the consumer. Since SLI is basically worthless now, it's rare, which ironically means it's way more expensive.

Maybe they don't wonna make a board with it when so many complain about sli that have never used it. Along with game makers not taking the time to make a game with it or a decent game at all. Too busy working on micro transactions. 

Ive always preferred two card. Best cost and performance in every generation minus the rtx hype cards.
