Are the new 10th Gen Intel CPUs better or worse than the AMD ones

So I'm just wondering this as I don't fully understand the tech behind them. I know that the new i9 actually can stay at like 60C but that is all i've read about them. Your opinions/thoughts?

They are just Skylake with more cores, die/IHS revisions, and better boost behavior.

 

The fact is, we have the same technology as we had in 2015, and the same general gaming performance as we had in 2017.

 

I wouldn't get one because it's on the very edge of that same Skylake technology.

 

Depending on what you have, I'd wait for something more compelling to come by to buy.

AMD offers more cores for less money.


Intel has higher clocks, and has lower core-core latency which translates into better gaming.

Best Analogy I can think of right now is Intel is running the 100m dash with its single core performance being slightly better than AMD and most games prefer single threaded/fast cores. Meanwhile, AMD is the matharon runner who after the first couple hundred meters or mile, blows past the out of breath Intel for the long game with video rendering, encoding, compiling etc...

I don't plan on building a 10th gen build, what im doing has a r5 3600. I just don't understand why the 10th gen was so hyped up

10th gen really wasn't hyped up in the sense that people had high expectations of something game changing.

 

10th gen was somewhat eagerly awaited because of how pathetic the 9th generation lineup was.

 

9th gen:

i3 was somewhat of an improvement, as it stepped up from being a 2/4 chip to a real 4/4

 

i5 was in a vacuum, okay and in line with historical i5's being a 6/6 without hyperthreading.

 

i7 was an 8/8 fucking disaster, because it had hyperthreading stolen from it so that

 

i9 8/16 could be made to make more money.

 

10th gen was a "this is what 9th gen should have been"

 

If you have a Ryzen 5 3600, you're good. It's similar to the i7-8700k/i5-10600k, if not slightly slower in some scenarios.

no, the i5 was a 6 core chip without hyperthreading.

 

hyperthreading was ONLY available on the low end pentiums and the mighty i9 (That conveniently never existed in the mainstream desktop before)

From what I can remember the Pentium g4560 has hyperthreading as it is 2/4 3.5ghz cpu

yes, like i said they are on the low end chips as well.

 

But that's less of a premium feature and more of a "how can we make this dual core suck less" feature in that implementation.

9th Gen was kind of a hot mess...Like @Mister Woof mentioned.

On the 8th Gen the i7-8700K and i7-8086K both were 6-core / 12-threads.

Then it kind of went backwards on the i7-9700K being 8-cores / 8-threads.

Soooo now on the 10th Gen, Intel is fixing what they messed up, and bringing Hyper-threading back on the i7's.

 

And to compete with AMD, the 10th Gen stack will now be:

i5 : 6-cores / 12-threads

i7: 8-cores / 16-threads

i9: 10-cores / 20-threads

 

If you were on a reasonable budget, people were literally recommending AMD CPUs, unless you get a i9-9900K.

Otherwise, it was go with the 3300X, 3600(X), 3800(X)....

AMD hasn't released their chips for this year, so it's not really fair to compare the two.

When they do, then we'll have a more complete picture of the CPUs available this year.
