Hobby server - How to stop windows updates?

Im running a home-server - hosting my steamcache, pihole, teamspeak , minecraft and csgo server. (using ubuntu VMs with HyperVM)

 

My question is simple: How can I turn off windows updates? Ive already pressed "Stop for 7days" as far as it goes. But is there some other ticks to make them stop completely ?

 

i5-3470 + 16gb 1333 + Windows Pro 1909 - build 1863.720. Its an old HP Compaq 8300

Unfortunately you can't permanently shut off Windows updates.

just as a workaround

 

you can set your network as a metered connection, and make sure "Download updates over metered connections" is turned off.

 

this should prevent windows from updating

It wil also "shut down" my internet if it uses more than the limit.

Even if it doesnt, the limit resets every month - so windows can update

in that case, no.. theres no way to permanently stop it from happening other than maybe a registry edit.

Really, don't turn off updates, they fix a lot of big security holes. 

 

I manage a few hyper-v hosts at works, they all get rebooted every month, a bit after patch tuesday. A reboot is simple, and the vms pause and resume, so there is basically no issues I get.

 

One way to turn off updates though is to point it to your own update server, then don't approve any updates with wsus. You can also pick exactly what updates you want it to get.

I have blocked all microsoft domains -> so I dont get any Update or send any System Information. But care Updates are important. Update it regular eta every 1-2 Month one evening.

you can, it requires modifying system files and crap and it's not a good idea

not one to two months, do it monthly, you should never be behind on updates, ensure that it gets security updates the day they are available. (feature updates can wait, security updates can't)

you can hold it off for as long as you want but reboot it when available and doesn't cause to much trouble (e.g early morning)

 

even if it's win 10 pro, it still has this option to disable auto reboot in group policy (No auto-restart with automatic installations of scheduled updates, it's in windows update of the group policy manager.)

We use the machine's Group Policy to configure updates on Win10 machines. I don't recommend turning them completely off. We make a system state backup before and after each update, so prefer them to be on our time, not some random reboot from MS. Hope this article helps.
