AMD is reliable now?

So one of the things that made intel bigger than AMD a few years ago was not only being more powerfull but also it's reliability. AMD had some conflicts in some applications, conflicts that made people choose intel even with their vulnerable processors.

AMD has been relaible for a while, they make great products like the 3600, 1600AF, 3700X, 3950x, 5700XT, 5500XT

Laptop: HP Spectre x360 13t, i7 8565u with 16 gigs, 512 gig  nvme ssd, UHD 620 4k

Other laptop: Acer Chromebook cb3 431 with 4 gigs, celeron n3060 with hd 400 and 16 gigs eMMC soon to be a minecraft server?

First gen Ryzen had its issues. 2nd Gen fixed many of those. At this point, I think it's decent.

Amd is reliable if you do a lot of streaming and if you do a lot of editing but if you do pure  gaming then I would go intel personally

Using AMD for Processors for ages. A couple of their GPUs can be a little unreliable but that normally happens during the warranty period and you can get it sorted. For processors there is no issues as of now for me.

I have no idea where everyone is getting the idea that AMD is unreliable. Anecdotal evidence for one GPU or CPU you had in the past tells you nothing. I've had more issues with Intel CPUs than I have had AMD CPUs over the past 15 years. That doesn't mean intel is less reliable than AMD or the other way around. Now first gen Ryzen did have some bugs that needed to be worked out but for a brand new architecture it's to be expected. Look at intel and zombie load, spectre, and meltdown, they go back years and years into a problem with the architecture. Same goes for GPUs and such.

AMD has needed to issue several AGESA updates for motherboards to get their chips to work with RAM modules over the last few years. They've also had to address issues with black screens etc. with the NAVI GPUs.

 

It's a fact that first generation (and second generation to an extent) has had historical problems with motherboards and RAM modules. 

 

Now, this isn't really a terrible thing. It's new. It had teething issues and they addressed it. So I have no problem with that. But to ignore it is to me a bit much.

Most of the AGESA patches were software based as were the issues many years back with their GPU drivers. I'll agree RAM was finicky as shit for first gen and second it improved and now with 3rd it's much better. Remember the RTX2080tis though? The first batch of those were dying like crazy and for 3-5 months after launch had issues. Not being an AMD fanboy but it's to be expected from every company and product launch

My AMD Ryzen 1st gen has been nothing but stable the last three years. The AMD videocard (which I have since upgraded to something Nvidia) worked flawlessly for its years of service for me (now it has been passed on to someone else, for whom his AMD Ryzen 3600 + my old RX 580 is worked great too).

The AMD system I had before  my current system - while being low end - worked without issues for years as well.

 

Oh and I also made an AMD APU system for my dad (2400G), which had some issues on day 1, but a clean install of the video drivers fixed that right up.

The only Intel system I have had is my laptop. Which has been working great too.

 

So other than the single issue on that 2400G system and the hit-or-miss memory speed support in the first years of my 1st gen Ryzen desktop, AMD has been working out great for me.

I can recommend AMD wholeheartedly. But that is just my anecdotal experience.

 

I don't have experiences with the RX 5700(XT) class of products though.

I don't think it's about being reliable.

The last time I checked (2016?) my single-core Athlon XP 1700+ from like 2001 still works -- have it in a display box now.

Same goes for my Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Phenom II X6 1090T, and FX-8350 that I pushed to 5.0 GHz cramming close to 1.5V into it.

 

Before AMD released Ryzen, there was was a iffy couple years (2012 ~ 2017) where Intel just performed better than anything AMD had to offer.

'Bulldozer' and it's refresh was...not great...

 

Now I think it's come full circle, and the roles have switched.

I mean, just in recent news, look at how the new AMD Ryzen 3 3300X compares against the Intel i5-9400F.

The vulnerabilities hit Intel...I wouldn't say "hard", but CPU performance took some noticeable hits from those.
