Hello, i recently upgraded my cpu to the ryzen 5 3600x and i noticed that the stock cooler (wraith spire) was winding up and down a lot and that causes noise that i don't enjoy so i wanted to switch to something quieter.

i was thinking about water cooling and after some research i noticed that custom loops are expensive, so that option is out

i have heard that aio coolers are much quieter but they usually run in the middle range of expenses

and air coolers can be quiet and effective but i don;t enjoy the looks that most of them give.

my main thing is i;m not one to overclock so i don;t need all the cooling power but i would like something that can stay quiet and keep my cpu at temps that are as good as if not better than the stock amd fan.

any suggestions on air or aio fans that look nice and keep things cool?

Air coolers are a lot more reliable than AIOs because of the lack of a pump, which is an extra point of failure for liquid coolers.

You don't need something super bulky, especially for just a 3600X. Something like a NH-U12S chromax.black, Dark Rock 4 or even Dark Rock Slim will be plenty for it.

Otherwise, if you're set on an AIO, even an 120mm should do, though they offer poor performance for the cost compared to other options.

That being said, I'd try some tweaks before you buy a new cooler (unless the money's not a problem). Make sure you're running the latest BIOS and chipset drivers, use the Ryzen Balanced power plan, adjust your CPU fan curve, and/or apply a slight negative voltage offset.

According to Gamers Nexus, the absolute best CPU cooler for Ryzen right now is the Arctic Liquid Freezer II line. Though, good luck finding any at the moment...

I had a similar issue with my 3900x and wraith cooler, the issue is that the temp the CPU idles at is between two fan targets. Install the fan control software for your motherboard and adjust the fan curve to your liking (or do it in BIOS)

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

For your case I would recommend an air cooler. If you don't like the look of a standard tower cooler, you could go for a down-draft cooler like a Thermalright AXP-200 or Scythe Shuriken Rev. B, which can look quite striking because the fan is facing the case window.

i have an nzxt h700 and id like to try and stay sub $200, although i see other people saying adjust the fan speeds in bios so as of now i have changed to the ryzen power plan and i will change the fan settings, i will probably upgrade anyways but for the time being i will see what the new changes do to the fan noise

the stock amd cooler sucks. but u don't need to make the jump to AIO... unless you really want to and were going to anyway.

Any noctua with a 120mm fan or dual 120mm fans will get you within 90% of the best AIOs and beating some. The noctuas bring you within 95% if you account for the same noise levels.

A great AIO is the Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer II 280mm or 360mm, both sold out now.

If you're looking for a quiet AIO solution, I recommend going with the H100i Pro XT.  You have options for Zero-RPM fan mode when your system doesn't need maximum cooling, and you can setup custom fan curves based on pump temp and not CPU package which will fluctuate significantly more causing the fans to constantly ramp up and down.  The H100i Pro XT is compatible with your AM4 socket, and should be more than sufficient for cooling the 3600X, even if you decide to overclock it in the future.  Let me know if you have any questions.
