He loses 10 pounds.

 

He starts out with 50 (20+30)

She starts out with 20

They have a total of 70 pounds between them.

They both put down 20 to combine to make 40

He takes the 40 and gives her the remaining 30 he had

Now she's left with 30 and he's left with 40

What is there not to get?

Person 1 lost 10 pounds and person 2 made 10 pounds

 

Person 1: puts in 20 pounds

Person 2: puts in 20 pounds

Person 1: gives P2 30 pounds

Person 1: take out 40 pounds

 

So if you put that in simple terms:

Person 1: -20

Person 2: -20

Person 1: -30

Person 2: +30

Person 1: +40

 

Person 1 ends up at -10

Person 2 ends up at +10

 

You can't say 'we both made 10 pounds!', without counting the 20 pounds from the beginning, meaning he paid 20+30 pounds to receive 40 pounds.

What is there not to understand? 

 

Forget the numbers in the riddle.  You can't end up with more than you start with, so if you do then there is an error.   So write it out if you need to (best way to avoid mistakes).

 

 

 

 

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.
