I've got a few videos I could probably remake better.

ISO is light senstivity

F how wide/open a lens gets. smaller =more light but also smaller focus area

shutter speed how quick the frame is taken. longer time=more light but more shake. to freeze something fast moving is often 1/400-1/1000

WB what color temperature you want

RAW vs JPEG. RAW gives lots of flexibility in post are big files that most sites won't accept.

The top 3 are edited from the raw version of this bottom photo. raw gives you amazing flexibility.

Given the inherent visual nature and deep scope of photography, I think trying to make a guide in the forum-post format would be doing both the beginners AND the experienced photographers trying to teach them a disservice.

Maybe we could create a pinned post with a list of our member's favorite YT tutorials or channels as a jumping off point though? What do you guys think?

IMO the best way to learn photography is to just do it. Reading about aperture and exposure is great and all but it doesn't mean anything if you're not holding the camera and taking photos.

I think a good way to learn the basics is through a series of assignments or photo challenges where each is designed to focus on how a certain part of the camera works or how exploit a certain aspect of photography. E.g. shoot 20 photos with the lens wide open, or shoot 20 photos of motion with a minimum shutter of 1/60.

This is what most photography classes do and is how I first started to really learn photography back in school as I am sure many others did. There's definitely some online classes or guides which do the same but unfortunately I am not knowledgeable of what is available.

IIRC Nikon's classes are free right now, and they teach some excellent topics.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.
