i3 9100 vs i5 8265U Excel performace

Hi

 

I must choose PC and I wonder which would be better for workload, excel performance i.e. I know i5 is laptop CPU but I wonder if it can be better than i3 desktop.

UserBenchmark says that i3 is better in benchmarks.

You're comparing a 15W CPU to a 65W CPU... obviously the desktop counter part is better.

1. Yes the i3-9100 is obviously superior compared to this specific i5. However, a desktop i5 of the same generation would be better. Even better would be Ryzen.

 

2. Please don't use cpubenchmark

do you already have the motherboard @giusgius ? : ) Is 1600AF available in your area?

are we building a laptop?  why the comparison?  If you need a laptop with horsepower...get a Clevo or some other model that you can buy without a cpu, but accepts desktop CPUs.  I'm thinking of doing this myself.  Have a i5-8500 collecting dust...and don't want to own a weak laptop cpu.  Know there's powerful laptop cpus that perform well in multi-threaded apps, but single core performance IMHO is what really makes a PC run well...ymmv.

Should I user PerformanceTEST soft to measure CPU performances? I use UserBenchmark often but do not know how good it might be to actually measure CPU power.

1600AF isn't available here but 1600 is.

No, I just wanted to know the performance difference btw those two. i5-8265U doesn't offer good big (100MB) excel performance I think, it's like even my i7-3632QM does it better than new i5, idk for sure.

UserBenchmark is the worst benchmark for comparing CPU's.

IMO cpubenchmark is fine and I use it sometimes. But I prefer Cinebench

1600AF isn't available here but 1600 is.

Ryzen 5 1600 AF is pretty much a Ryzen 5 2600 with lower clockspeed. The old non-AF 1600 is worse because it's a first gen Ryzen.

Neither of them have integrated graphics.

I'm using a work laptop with a i5 7200U...this 2c/4t CPU is sluggish, to say the least.

I should have added I have a i5-7600 (4c/4t @ 4ghz) in my work desktop...same thing, more or less, as a 9100...it works very well in LARGE excel files.  That said when I only had 8gb RAM things were sluggish...16gb RAM helps a lot.  Though my excel files never approach 100mb.
