Stay at 1440p or Drop to 1080p

I currently have a 1440p 60hz monitor and for day to day use it works perfectly ok. The problem comes when I try to push my system anything beyond esports gaming. The core system powering this setup is a R5 2600, 1060 6GB, with 8GB 2400mhz. I know this pairing is extremely not ideal. I am thinking of upgrading to a RX 5700 and 16GB of 3200mhz ram, which would definitely be able to run games at 1440p no problem. Then, there's the other option of downgrading to a 1080p monitor, perhaps still with the ram upgrade. The latter option will probably save me quite a bit of money that I can use for other hobbies. I should have the capital for both options, but I'd prefer to spend no more than $350-$400.

My question is of what you would do in this case? 1440p may not be sustainable and that's that, but I need second opinions.

That's true, so I guess I'd be looking at the 1660ti to 5600xt range? I don't want the problem where the GPU is not good enough for higher settings at 60 though, as those cards may present.

Why downgrade to a different monitor?

 

lowering the resolution of the game also works.

Non-native resolutions don't look as good, but it works as a substitution solution.

That would save you the most money obviously.

I sometimes game at 1440p on a 4k screen and that still looks way sharper than 1080p, does it differ going from 1440 to 1080 that much?

 

Also a 1080p 144hz screen would also be an option if you want to go that route.

personally as a 144hz 1440p user, id recommend you to go 1080p 144hz and be happy about having 2 screens. that also comes with benefits for work. and still make sure you got dual channel 16gb ram (other than that a 2600 / 1060 6gb should be aight, right?)
