The LTT video yesterday motivated me to finally get the SSD I've been wanting. What did the video convince you to finally buy before prices go up?

I just hope people who do get influenced by the video make a rational decision by themselves. Sure, you can be motivated by the video, but only as a last step. You shouldn't spend money just because you 'need to right now'.

Nothing here.  I can wait out anything currently, and I tend to buy when I want to, not when things are at a low point historically or there is a threat of a rise on the horizon.

 

As @minibois said, it's a suggestive video and information, which should be taken with the other factors in a buyer's life... then a decision should be made.  Looks like you did so, and hope it was a good one.

Ram, for the longest while I been saving for a decent amount of memory, but conspiracy-ly every time something comes up when I need to spend that save money for something. Honestly my priority to buy ram is dis-proportionately low compared to how much I need it in my work (Autocad and Revit eats up ram quick). Now the urgency of the imminent price spike convinced me to finally bite the bullet.

It told me that I would be waiting a while at the very least.  The thing is the same problem is going to be experienced by the console makers to a similar degree which may push off their launches too, so it may make my current PC live longer.  It seems I am in the same position I was before the virus. Merely that the time frame has been extended by an unknown amount so I am still waiting.

it's made me consider purchasing an SSD or RAM earlier for my new build, I was going to put off buying them until after easter, but I might pull the trigger earlier, more due to the likelihood of new phone flagships pulling resources for nand than because of coronavirus though, as well as the new console production ramping up.

I have a couple builds coming up so i went a head and bought a few sets of ram, a couple extra small ssds, and a few cheap power supplies.

 

Prices are low enough right now that its not much of a burdon. And worst case is the projects dont happen i can always sell them.

 

If prices do go up a good bit i night even make money off them. Or get all my money back.

 

I made a killing when mining was big and when ram prices were god awful.

You make a point.  Perhaps.  The only thing I KNOW I’m going to need is ram so there’s an argument for me to buy some fast ddr4 while it’s still available even though I have nothing to put it into and it would just sit there.  Even that is a bet though.  Technology systems continue to advance.  This situation hasn’t stopped or even slowed technical development.  If it goes on a realllly long time we might see ddr5.  That’s pretty close too.  If that happens ddr4 would be useless.  So I’m torn.

I mean, DDR3 is still performing exceptionally well. DDR4 until ryzen with infinity fabric didn't see any discernbable gaming improvements over DDR3, and I expect we will see something similar with DDR5, with there being no noticeable improvements besides a slight efficiency gain, so getting DDR4 now would still be a worthwhile venture, if you're building a rig in the next like 18 months or so I'll guess.

DDR4 for sure would not be useless. DDR3 is still performing like a champ. I use DDR3 in my own rig. If you know for sure you'll need it then it may be worth to pick up a good, fast kit of DDR4 just in case prices do rise. I don't think you'll regret it

Pretty much an entire new server (To retire the 15 yr old ones running my business), and gigabit networking hardware, and a new network switch, and 8 port KVM. Not because of the latest video... but because every time Linus plays in the server room I find myself needing new things!
