I didn’t get the Thermochill radiator that I was planning to use for this build, but what I was able to get was a Feser X-changer 360 radiator, which is marketed as a “Thermochill Killer”. What better way to test this claim than to put it up against the Skulltrail system.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/skulltrail-2-002.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-34" style="vertical-align: text-top;" title="Feser One X-changer 360" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/skulltrail-2-002-300x225.jpg" alt="Here\'s the Feser One X-changer 360 rad installed." width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>Here you can see it installed in the bottom. The cabling has also been tidied up substantially down there now that I have a radiator in. Everything needs to be tucked away perfectly to keep the cables out of the fans.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/skulltrail-2-004.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-32" style="vertical-align: text-top;" title="skulltrail-2-004" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/skulltrail-2-004-300x225.jpg" alt="Cable management from the back." width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>Here’s the cable management from the back. You can see the both of these Noctua fans have a clear path to the other side of the case. The 3rd fan is exhausting right into the intake of the power supply, then directly out of the case. I thought there might be cause for concern having the hot radiator air going into the power supply, but the exhaust from the power supply is quite cool, even under full load.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/skulltrail-2-001.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-33" style="vertical-align: text-top;" title="skulltrail-2-001" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/skulltrail-2-001-300x225.jpg" alt="All water tubes filled, but still needs some finishnig touches" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>All of the Tygon tubing is full of Feser One black fluid and green UV reactive zip ties are being used on all the tubes to ensure that they do not slip off. There is still some fine work to be done, such as splicing the power cords for the two cathode kits so that they will both turn on and off with the same switch.</p>   <p>I also need to go get some blue UV SATA cables from home. Intel, in their infinite wisdom only included 4 SATA cables with the Skulltrail motherboard when there are 6 ports, all of which are being used in this system. Fortunately I have some extras at home that I’m willing to part with for the sake of my customer. Otherwise he’d end up with mismatched cables, and in a system like that, that kind of thing is unacceptable.</p>   <p>I also still need a RAM cooler for the FB-DIMM memory. I had a CoolIT one on there before, and it works great, but I took it off out of curiosity to see how hot the memory would run.</p>   </div>   <div class="Meta"><img src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/themes/blogbox-10/images/MetaLeft.gif" alt="" align="left" /><img src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/themes/blogbox-10/images/MetaRight.gif" alt="" align="right" />   <div class="Category">Category : <a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/category/build-logs" title="View all posts in Build Logs" rel="category tag">Build Logs</a></div>   <div class="PostCom"><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/build-logs/skulltrail-build-update#comments" title="Comment on Skulltrail Build Update">Comment <span>1</span></a></div>   </div>   </div>   <div class="Post" id="post-28">       <div class="PostHead">   <h1><a title="Permanent Link to Ever Run a CPU Through the Washing Machine and Dryer?" href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/dumb-stuff/ever-run-a-cpu-through-the-washing-machine-and-dryer" rel="bookmark">Ever Run a CPU Through the Washing Machine and Dryer?</a></h1>   Posted by: linus on 29th April 2008</div>       <div class="PostContent">   <p>Yeah I didn’t think so.</p>   <p>Well I did. It was an accident. I was helping a friend change his CPU from an Athlon 64 6000+ (125W) to a 5000+ Black Edition (65W) because his room is so hot that the CPU is overheating, and rather than buy a new heatsink, this was his solution of choice. Whatever.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/washing-machine-cpu-001.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-29" title="washing-machine-cpu-001" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/washing-machine-cpu-001-300x225.jpg" alt="Here\'s the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ in question" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>So I told him “okay, I’ll take that 6000+ off your hands and give you a 5000+ Black”. I took the new CPU over to his house, put it in his machine, took the old CPU, put it in the plastic clamshell from the new CPU, and slipped it into my pocket “temporarily” until I could put it down somewhere.</p>   <p>**later that night**</p>   <p>Oh no. Linus forgot to do his laundy this weekend. Better get cracking. Chuck everything into the washer, put it in the dryer overnight, wake up and find an empty clamshell package floating around in the laundry in the dryer. At this point I realized what happened.</p>   <p>Anyway, to make a long story short, the pins were bent to crap, but it appeared (on the outside) to be otherwise undamaged. Electronics in general (and from now on I will assume this also applies to CPUs) are not actually harmed by being wet for a short period of time as long as they are not powered on while wet, and allowed to dry before using them.</p>   <p>After bending the CPU pins back to normal (or close to normal) using a metal tipped mechanical pencil (every geek should have one, just for bending pins), I tested the CPU today at work and it’s functioning. Full speed, boots into Windows, the whole deal.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/washing-machine-cpu-002.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-30" title="washing-machine-cpu-002" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/washing-machine-cpu-002-300x225.jpg" alt="pins have been bent back to normal" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>Please bear in mind I am not endorsing “washing machine” as a legitimate way of cleaning your CPU (cotton buds and rubbing alcohol are far more effective, take less time, less risky, etc), but it looks like all is not lost if you (like me) accidently wash a CPU.</p>   </div>   <div class="Meta"><img src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/themes/blogbox-10/images/MetaLeft.gif" alt="" align="left" /><img src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/themes/blogbox-10/images/MetaRight.gif" alt="" align="right" />   <div class="Category">Category : <a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/category/dumb-stuff" title="View all posts in Dumb Stuff" rel="category tag">Dumb Stuff</a></div>   <div class="PostCom"><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/dumb-stuff/ever-run-a-cpu-through-the-washing-machine-and-dryer#comments" title="Comment on Ever Run a CPU Through the Washing Machine and Dryer?">Comments <span>7</span></a></div>   </div>   </div>   <div class="Post" id="post-27">       <div class="PostHead">   <h1><a title="Permanent Link to Adding a PCIe Connector to a Power Supply" href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/how-to/adding-a-pcie-connector-to-an-older-power-supply" rel="bookmark">Adding a PCIe Connector to a Power Supply</a></h1>   Posted by: linus on 29th April 2008</div>       <div class="PostContent">   <p>The first thing I want to say about this post is that in 90% of cases this is NOT something that I recommend. Normally power supplies that do not have a PCIe 6-pin connector lack one for a GOOD REASON. They are not capable of supplying adequate power to a modern graphics card an they should be replaced. Here’s a short list of the criteria you should consider before doing this mod:</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-029.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-10" title="power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-029" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-029-300x225.jpg" alt="PSU Specs for SST-ST405 Power Supply" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>- Brand name power supply with a good reputation (I’m using a Silverstone Strider 400W for example)</p>   <p>- Adequate ratings on the 12V rail(s). (The one I’m using is rated for 14A and 15A on its two 12V rails)</p>   <p>- Warranty. You will be voiding it. Don’t do this to a power supply that is still under warranty</p>   <p>- Safety. If performed wrong, this mod could be very dangerous to your power supply, any computer you plug it into, and your health. You could be shocked, start a fire, etc. Check everything thrice.</p>   <p>- Cables - If you don’t have enough Molex or SATA cables as it is, you won’t be able to do this mod. Actually adding cables to the power supply is outside of the scope of this article. In the case of the 400W power supply I used, it has 3 cables each with 3 molex connectors. I decided to sacrifice one of them to be my new PCIe cable.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-001.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-11" title="power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-001" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-001-300x225.jpg" alt="The new connector sitting next to the old connector" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>The first thing I did was clip the two molex plugs off my molex to PCIe adapter. Then I clipped the molex plug off the power supply leaving as much length as possible.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-003.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-12" title="power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-003" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-003-300x225.jpg" alt="All the cables clipped off" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>Then all the wire ends were stripped so that they could be joined together.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-008.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-14" title="power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-008" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-008-300x225.jpg" alt="Brown matches up with black" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>Once the wires are stripped, we have to figure out which wires to twist together. The easiest (and safest) way to do this is to use an existing adapter for the mod (which we did. We used a molex to PCIe adapter, and all we’re doing is making it permanent) so that you can match up the wire colours by simply plugging it together. In this photo you can see that black goes to brown/black, and yellow goes to uglier yellow. The red does not go anywhere so we’ll show you what to do with that later.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-011.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-17" title="power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-011" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-011-300x225.jpg" alt="Everything is twisted together in threesomes...." width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>Here you should spread everything out and check your work (obviously with nothing plugged in…). Do a quick sanity check and make sure that you’re basically recreating the conditions of the original adapter.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-014.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-19" title="power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-014" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-014-300x225.jpg" alt="soldering connections together is MUCH safer long term." width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>It’s always best to solder wires together instead of just twisting them for a cable mod like this. We applied flux and solder to make sure that these won’t come apart. I speak from experience when I say that twisted/taped cables will eventually stop working correctly.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-018.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-21" title="power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-018" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-018-300x225.jpg" alt="clipping off the red (5V) wire" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-020.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-22" title="power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-020" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/power-supply-mod-adding-a-pcie-connector-020-300x225.jpg" alt="covered in tape and ready to be tucked away" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>You want to make sure that any cables that are not supposed to connect are covered adequately. Yet another great resource is the tech support of your graphics manufacturer. You can read them the specs of the power supply and ask them if it’s enough.</p>   <p>Also I accept no liability if by following these instructions you bork your power supply, motherboard, any other hardware, yourself, your house, your other property, etc. This mod is performed at your own risk and is just there to offer guidance.</p>   </div>   <div class="Meta"><img src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/themes/blogbox-10/images/MetaLeft.gif" alt="" align="left" /><img src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/themes/blogbox-10/images/MetaRight.gif" alt="" align="right" />   <div class="Category">Category : <a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/category/how-to" title="View all posts in How-To" rel="category tag">How-To</a></div>   <div class="PostCom"><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/how-to/adding-a-pcie-connector-to-an-older-power-supply#respond" title="Comment on Adding a PCIe Connector to a Power Supply">No Comments</a></div>   </div>   </div>   <div class="Post" id="post-3">       <div class="PostHead">   <h1><a title="Permanent Link to Working on a Skulltrail System" href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/build-logs/working-on-a-skulltrail-system" rel="bookmark">Working on a Skulltrail System</a></h1>   Posted by: linus on 28th April 2008</div>       <div class="PostContent">   <p>Just wanted to share some photos of an awesome water cooled system that I’ve had the pleasure of working on.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/9800-gx2.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-4" title="9800-gx2" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/9800-gx2-300x225.jpg" alt="Skulltrail System with water blocks installed" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>A customer asked for a wicked crazy gaming (or whatever else you want to do, I suppose) system, so this is what I put together for him</p>   <p>2x Xeon 5430 Harpertown LGA771 CPUs</p>   <p>Intel D5400XS “Skulltrail” motherboard</p>   <p>4×2GB Buffalo FB-DIMM memory modules (PC2-6400)</p>   <p>2x Visiontek 3870 X2 video cards in Crossfire-X</p>   <p>Silverstone Decathlon 1200W Power Supply</p>   <p>4x 1TB HDD</p>   <p>LG DVD/BLU-RAY/HD-DVD Combo Drive</p>   <p>Auzentech X-fi Prelude</p>   <p>Fully customized water cooling system powered by Swiftech, D-TEK, Thermochill, Vadim, and Noctua with Feser One UV Black coolant</p>   <p>UV Cold Cathodes</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/skulltrail-005.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-6" title="skulltrail-005" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/skulltrail-005-300x225.jpg" alt="Installed into the case" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>So I’ve made some progress on the build over the course of the day since I took that last picture, and one of the things I discovered is that you can’t use just any FB-DIMM memory in Skulltrail. I had initially thought that Mac Pro memory would work fine as long as it’s PC2-6400 (for best speed of course), but (silly me), the Mac Pro memory has HUGE heatspreaders on it, so if you’re looking for memory for your new Skulltrail system, be sure to get appropriate memory. The recommended SKUs are listed on the page for the Skulltrail board on NCIX.com</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/skulltrail-006.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-7" title="skulltrail-006" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/skulltrail-006-300x225.jpg" alt="Better view of the board layout" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>Here’s a better view of the internals, and the loop order. The CPU on the left will have water coming directly from the pump in the bottom.</p>   <p><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/skulltrail-007.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-5" title="skulltrail-007" src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://techtips.ncix.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/skulltrail-007-300x225.jpg" alt="The engine room" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>   <p>And here’s where a Thermochill PA120.3 loaded up with Noctua fans is going to go to keep this beast cool. I may end up adding another radiator, but I’m not sure yet at this point. It’s going to depend on the temps. The customer is pretty flexible, and very patient, but as you can see, he’s going to get a VERY fine system. I’ll make sure to post some pictures of the system when it’s done with a little bit better lighting so you can see it all lit up in all its glory.</p>   </div>   <div class="Meta"><img src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/themes/blogbox-10/images/MetaLeft.gif" alt="" align="left" /><img src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/themes/blogbox-10/images/MetaRight.gif" alt="" align="right" />   <div class="Category">Category : <a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/category/build-logs" title="View all posts in Build Logs" rel="category tag">Build Logs</a></div>   <div class="PostCom"><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/build-logs/working-on-a-skulltrail-system#respond" title="Comment on Working on a Skulltrail System">No Comments</a></div>   </div>   </div> <div class="navigation">   <div class="alignleft"></div>   <div class="alignright"></div>   </div>           </td>   <td class="SR" valign="top">       <h2>Categories</h2>   <ul>   <li class="cat-item cat-item-3"><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/category/build-logs" title="View all posts filed under Build Logs">Build Logs</a>   </li>   <li class="cat-item cat-item-14"><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/category/dumb-stuff" title="View all posts filed under Dumb Stuff">Dumb Stuff</a>   </li>   <li class="cat-item cat-item-11"><a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/category/how-to" title="View all posts filed under How-To">How-To</a>   </li>   </ul><br />       <h2>Recent Posts</h2>   <ul> <li><a href='/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/build-logs/skulltrail-build-update' title='Skulltrail Build Update'>Skulltrail Build Update</a></li>   <li><a href='/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/dumb-stuff/ever-run-a-cpu-through-the-washing-machine-and-dryer' title='Ever Run a CPU Through the Washing Machine and Dryer?'>Ever Run a CPU Through the Washing Machine and Dryer?</a></li>   <li><a href='/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/how-to/adding-a-pcie-connector-to-an-older-power-supply' title='Adding a PCIe Connector to a Power Supply'>Adding a PCIe Connector to a Power Supply</a></li>   <li><a href='/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/build-logs/working-on-a-skulltrail-system' title='Working on a Skulltrail System'>Working on a Skulltrail System</a></li>   </ul><br />       </td>   <td width="18"> </td>   </tr>   </table>   <div class="clearer"></div>   <div class="Footer">   <div class="right">   <a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/feed"><img src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/themes/blogbox-10/images/feed.gif" alt=""/></a>   </div>   <a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.linustechtips.com/"><img src="/web/20080505084708im_/http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/themes/blogbox-10/images/FooterLogo.gif" alt="Linus Tech Tips Blog" align="left" /></a>   <p>   Designed by <a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.blueverse.com/">Blueverse</a> & <a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.templatekingdom.com/">Template Kingdom</a> Brought by <a href="/web/20080505084708/http://www.wpthemesfree.com/" title="Wordpress Themes">Wordpress Themes</a>. </p>   </div>   </div>   </body>   </html>                           <!--   FILE ARCHIVED ON 8:47:08 May 5, 2008 AND RETRIEVED FROM THE   INTERNET ARCHIVE ON 22:16:33 Feb 13, 2014.   JAVASCRIPT APPENDED BY WAYBACK MACHINE, COPYRIGHT INTERNET ARCHIVE.       ALL OTHER CONTENT MAY ALSO BE PROTECTED BY COPYRIGHT (17 U.S.C.   SECTION 108(a)(3)).   -->

Lol at the Dumb stuff page. Putting a cpu in the washer and dryer and it still works :) http://web.archive.org/web/20080505214304/http://www.linustechtips.com/category/dumb-stuff

Great way to clean thermal paste off :D jk

Wordpress isn't a bad tool in making websites imo.
