In the past few months I've been splitting my load between Mac and Windows and even reducing my load to a single operating system to see which one is better to use.

I'm torn between the idea of getting a beefier Mac desktop and ditching my custom build PC or just using the two operating systems in tandem.

Edit: I do play games on my Windows desktop, but I'm starting to play a lot less games as I get older so productivity is more important than power for gaming. The ability to use Bootcamp on Mac so I can play the occasional game is much more useful than having a desktop in my opinion.

What do you guys think?

If you don't have a very specific need for macOS or an incredible preference for macOS I wouldn't switch to a beefier mac. You'll only end up paying more for worse hardware.

I'd stay with Windows or go to Linux for some novelty. And I don't really like Apple as a company so I wouldn't use Mac.

No offense but if you don't like Apple as a company then it doesn't really help the argument here. I like both platforms and seem to just get more work done on Mac than I do on Windows, though of course I can make a more powerful computer with Windows as the operating system than I can do with a Mac.

None taken. And if you get better productivity from using a Mac then go for it, it all depends on your priorities. I personally feel more productive on a more familiar platform (Windows) while the appeal of Linux is the fact that it's free and customizable.

I see the argument of Linux and also the purposefulness of Windows. I want to keep both but then again I feel like my setup could be much more compacted and simplified with a singular operations base. For the work I do I'd get much more value out of Mac since I just do mostly video editing, programming, and web-based work. It just feels wrong to leave behind the better gaming ability which is my main concern at this point. I'd also be reducing my need for Linux on a Unix system, that being MacOS. It's a tug-of-war right now for my needs vs my wants.

Why not both?

They are in the end the same tool and can do much the same things but have very different strengths.

I'm trying to make my technological setup minimalistic across the board. I have everything Apple already and my PC is the only thing that stands out. I love it to death but I feel much more comfortable and productive on an Apple product. I've used everything from Android to MacOS and I just feel much more comfortable with Apple products as a whole.

I'm totally into anything that is a computer.
I could have fun for a full day on an old trash picked XT with an IBM monochrome display trying to find old games that work on it.
I enjoy running macos occasionally on a PC just to play around with it or to work out client issues when they have them with a mac.

Most of the stuff I do and enjoy personally will not run on a mac natively.
I feel a bit crippled when I try to spend an actual work day using only a mac.
And I end up RDPing to a lot of windows boxes to get things done :)

I'm a pretty big fan of the underlying operating system on a mac but not very well versed in it as I only use it on occasion.
I'm a hardware guy and like all of the options and variables in PC stuff.

To me macs are just a toy.
And PCs are an even better toy.

I've been trying to follow this for years (~10) with a beefy MBP, overpaying each time. Mac for programming/leisure, bootcamp for gaming and occasional win-only soft.

My experience for graphically intensive games is mostly playing on low-mid specs to go 80+ FPS (Overwatch, PUBG), and I don't care about every latest AAA game as much as I did years ago.

Bootcampwise: while W7-8.1 were more or less stable, W10 is guaranteed to crush every now and then, or go blue screen - reinstalling twice a year is a given.

Tried eGPU with 1060 and 580 last year on Mojave - didn't have a good experience.

Gonna stop stubbornly overpaying to get 'top tier graphics' macs just to game. Planning to put together a miniATX probably with a 1660, connect it to my mac's setup (monitor, accessories) and hide it:)

My suggestion - go with two separate systems:) or wait till eGPU+bootcamp will be a foolproof option.

Look into what hardware is best for a Hackintosh and build a machine based on that. There really is little point buying a Mac, you're spending money on having the branding with some hardware thrown in for good luck.

As far as I know, Hackintosh is a constant maintenance.

It comes down to prefrence. If your more of a MacOS guy then stick with Apple, if your more of a Windows guy stick with WIndows. Like you said you can install Windows via Boot camp. I have no love for Windows any more, I think WIndows 10 is crap. Me personally Id either go to Linux or go to a Mac. But it comes down to what OS you feel will do what you need to do the best.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
