so i have a ryzen 3400g and i was wondering what a good upgrade would be i was thinking the ryzen 7 2700 but its the same price as the 3400g so i dont know if it will perform better but it has more cores and threads

What do you use your system for? Do you have a dedicated GPU or are you just using your 3400g? The 2700 would be the same price because it's now on clearance.

i use my system for gaming and im using a rx580 i got the 3400g because i didnt have the money for a gpu but then i got the money and now there is no point in having it and my cpu is always at 100% usage in games but my gpu is at 50ish %

What motherboard?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

If all you do is game then the 2700 doesn't make sense as an upgrade. Sell your 3400g and get the 3600 or 3600x. That will be the best performance bump for now, a new GPU down the line would be the next upgrade.

The 2700 would help a bit or you can go with a  3600 or 3600x.

Stretch the budget a little, and get a Ryzen 3600.  Sell the 3400g to make up that extra bit.

so when i put a new cpu in do i have to do anything other than put it in and start the system back up ???????

You need to reply to comments in order for people to see your response.

 

Before you insert a new CPU go into your bios and reset everything to default settings, other wise you are all good to just put the new 3600 in. You can OC and change RAM speeds again once the new CPU is installed. Otherwise nothing else is required, no need to back up the system, although it never hurts to do this.
