ultrabook 8460p cpu upgrade

im trying to squeeze the last bit of life out of this shit box laptop, it has an i5 2450m, i am almost 100% sure this laptop actually has a socket (if it doesn't i'm comfortable melting off solder)

is there a better cpu for this laptop, possibly a better gpu or an e-gpu, it doesnt have thunderblot 3 so im pretty sure i cant get an egpu.

any ideas are helpul

Do you have an electronics recycle store near you that you could look around for scrap laptops with similar chips and then salvage that and put it on your rig?

Linux.  That thing was hella powerful once upon a time.  Game on it? No.  No cpu/gpu upgrade will make that possible.  It’s 2012 era. Pcie 1.0 and the fastest memory the cpu is capable of playing with is ddr1333.  There are two different sockets that chip is compatible with, and to make it more fun because it’s a laptop the makers probably didn’t support all the CPUs that fit whichever socket it’s actually got.  It’s got a Hd graphics 3000 iGPU in it.  Don’t know if you’re running on that or something else.

The standard move with laptops is put as much memory in it as will fit, add an SSD, and it does what it does.  It will browse the web, watch 1080p videos, maybe even play some Minecraft at usable if not impressive frame rates if you lay off the mods.  It’s got life.  Just not gaming life. I’d be more worried about the battery myself.  That and the PSU are the things that will age out.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

6470m graphics is a lot better than hd 3000 as far as rendering triangles goes (which is what 3D GPUs mostly do). https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6470M.43075.0.html

its a prime example of how laptop GPUs have almost nothing actually in common with the desktop GPUs they are named after.

It’s going to have more issues with drivers and it’s going to use more power.  It will make Minecraft go faster.  It will still not run modern games. You may get some retro stuff to go though.  It does have directx11.

As for what CPUs can be put into the thing and have it still work that is going to be very make and model specific.  Personally I wouldn’t bother.  If it’s a soldered cpu you’re looking at reballing, which is such a pita the word doesn’t even cover it.  Multiple (like more than 3) hours minimum to get that cpu off and the new one on.  If the motherboard will even support such a thing to begin with.  You might get your 4 core multithread cpu on there and then find there’s not enough power in the PSU to run it or something.

funnily enough i have a 8460p as well, and can confirm it has a socket and native support for some core i7 quadcores, if you were to plan on that

Any suggestions on a quad core i7?
