Hi everyone,

While cleaning my PC I tried to dislodge my heatsink from my cpu/mb however the processor came with it.

It appears to be completely stuck to the heatsink. (Old model)

Now I can't seem to get it off. Tried heat and alcohol but to no succes.

Can also not clip it back in because the lock collides with the heatsink. (AM3+ socket)

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Holy crap, please don't set the CPU pins down with a cooler attached on your table ???

Anyways, get a small thread (floss, thread for crafts, etc.) hold the CPU carefully, so it won't 'jump' away and just run the thread between the cooler and the CPU. Using the hairdryer beforehand could help.. But keep in mind you're working with a heatsink, something designed to soak up a lot of heat.

Whenever I have this to happen I simply push it to the side/edge of the cooler instead of trying to lift it right off the cooler.

Once it gets about a third of the way clear of the cooler the chip will tend to move suddenly, beware of that and take it easy - Eventually it will just come off the cooler on it's own.

If doing it this way you can simply start by placing/holding the cooler so it's surface is about level/even with a table or something and let the CPU push out and onto this surface, eliminating the worry of it dropping to the floor.

Do this with the CPU pins facing up, not down.

If using your thumbs beware of pushing too much at the pins, I've bent (Slightly) a few doing that before, just check those at the spot where your thumbs were before reinstalling it. Push directly at the edges of the CPU's PCB and nowhere else.

Also note with newer style boards, to avoid this in the future take advantage of the gap between the two halves of the cooler mounting collar. Instead of being a one piece "Ring" as before they're now made as two seperate pieces.

These were made this way so you can push it to one side and remove the cooler while reducing the risk of the CPU popping out with it.

If you have a bench vice, carefully lock the CPU into the vice, and then twist the cooler.

Indeed tried with floss and twisting and turning. Also didn't have the result I was hoping for.

In that case, try the floss-method, but with something like a credit card (of course something quite disposable). AMD stock paste has kind of a SUCC effect, which floss can sometimes break, but sometime you just need something to properly loosen the contact.

Of course, be careful again the CPU won't pop off.

Once you manage to remove it (try some methods ppl suggested) check for the pins cos I’m not sure they are not bent , at least they look bent to me in the pic you showed

Most likely from pushing the chip with their thumb(s), done it myself before.

Finally managed to get it loose.

Put the hairdryer on it for like 20 min then put a flathead screwdriver to it and smashed it off.

Quite aware that this is not a safe method but didn't really seem to have many options left.

Have almost put everything back together now and will be hoping my system still works :)

thanks for the suggestions

Remember to check that pins if they didn’t bend when you rip it out from socket.

The CPU pulling out of the socket in itself shoudn't have hurt anything, done it many times before myself and aside from checking the pins I had no problem.

So turned pc on.

No beep no startup. Clearly everything was getting power. Even the CPU led indicator was powered since it kept burning ^^

Going to sleep now (3am in Europe)

Will try a different CPU tomorrow think I have an old one lying around somewhere and we'll see whether I botched my CPU or not.
