How do I know if my internet is fast?

GamerBlake

Hey everyone,

I recently moved to a new home and I plan on gaming here for the forseeable future but I'm not sure exactly how good my internet is.

I did a speedtest and these were my results.

Can someone with knowledge of internet speeds/networking let me know if this is good, fair, bad, or totally unplayable internet speed?

Thanks & Happy New Year! :)

A 12ms ping is really good.

Almost 600Mbit down is astonishing. I hope you take good advantage of that.

Almost 18Mbit up is good but nothing special. Unless you're a content creator though uploading videos or host your own file servers. This won't affect you very much.

Awesome! That’s great to hear! :)

So like..if I’m not a content creator and I just play games online (and sometimes stream) I should be good to go with no problem?

Streams are an uploading function. The good news is they're very compressed before being uploaded so ~18Mbit up is enough for 1080p casual streaming.

Ah ok I see.

Just curious, how come when I download Steam games I only get like 35 MB/s if my speed is 597 MB/s?

Internet speeds are measured in Mbits. Your actual download speeds are MB/s. These are different units of measurement. MB/s = Mbit / 8. So ~600Mbit = ~75MB/s. You're getting a little under 50% what you're paying for but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bottleneck on your end. This could be a restriction anywhere between you and their servers. What you can try doing is start two downloads from two different websites. If the combined download rate is ~75MB/s then it's a per site limit issue and you have no control over that.

xactly how good my internet is.

Xfinity has a good network in most areas. That being said, while those speeds are good. Figure out how good they are during prime time. Xfinity uses a hybrid Fiber coax network. Meaning from your home to the node is coax and is shared by other customers. If your node is not congested then things will be awsome. If the node is congested then you might loose performance during prime time. Besides that you have good download speeds. Their fasted speed on coax is 1 gbps down 45 Mbps up.

OH at least in Michigan they have prices increases going in to effect today. Just be aware and check your bill. They doubled the broadcast TV fee and raised internet only pricing.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Oh wow I learned a lot from that! Thanks! :)

When would you say would be “Prime Time” for testing? Like 6pm-7pm?

I saw a video where Linus recommended at LEAST 40 Mbit/s for streaming but how many MB/s is that?

I don’t think the price change is happening here in California. Even so our internet is on a contract so our prices are set until the contract expires and can’t be raised.

Thanks again!

Yeah, so how it works is this. The price of your services cant change. BUT the cost of fees can. Comcast will raise the cost of fees even if your in a contract. Pretty much a contract fucks over the customer because you cant get out of it without paying a termination fee, while Comcast can freely rasie the cost of its fees and nothing bad happens to them.

Id say 4pm to 9pm. Basically when people get home from school/work and to when they go to bed.

Internet services are rated in Mega BITS per second, not Mega BYTES per second. You have close to 20 MegaBITS per second. Comcast wont offer any more unless your on Gigabit or Gigabit pro. If its an constellation I only get like 10 Mbps. Some customers only get 5 Mbps in some areas.

Wait so are you saying that Linus basically said in his video that my internet isn’t fast enough to stream on YouTube? ?

That doesn’t sound right though. I’ve streamed on Twitch & stuff before with no problems but in his video he said he recommends 40 Mbit/s for streaming.

So if I’m streaming my games on YouTube that’s download but streaming my games on Twitch is upload? Wouldn’t they both be upload if I’m uploading the streaming of my game for people to watch?

No. WHen you watch shit off of streaming sites that uses your download. Your upload is used when you send data out to the internet. So if you stream games to services like youtube and twitch your leveraging the upload and the more upload you have the better. Which is why when your limited on upload streaming can be difficult.

I guess that’s what I mean. My upload is ~18 Mbit/s but Linus said I need 40-50 but in reality I’ve streamed before with no problem so I’m wondering how that’s possible if my internet isn’t fast enough according to what Linus said?

Thats probably for 4K streaming. I personally dont stream, becuase besides low ass upload rates Comcast also have a 1 TB cap in most areas. I can tell you this, you need about 25 Mbps download to stream 4K Netfllix. But as it stands, lower the resolution the easier it is to stream. I think bit rate also has a role to play, but like I said, I dont stream games. I just watch shit. Id assume 18 Mbps is enough to stream 1080p.

Yeah I actually don’t stream very often but sometimes when I am doing Resident Evil 2 speed runs I’ll stream. Maybe once a week for a couple hours.

Im surprised Comcast doesn’t have a 1TB limit where I live. If 25 MBps download is required for 4K streaming that should be no problem if my download speed was near 600 MBps. That means all 4 TVs in my house could stream 4K and still have speed to spare. If only I had a 4K monitor or TV. ?  But mine is 2560x1440 144hz. Although I’m pretty sure my 8700K & 2080 Ti could theoretically handle 4K 60 fps.

How do you know they dont and you have "Unlimited" plan? If you do their xFI advantage equplment rental you get unlimted. If you pay $25 to $50 a month extra you can also get unlimited. The only place I know they dont have a data cap is the North East of the US, becuase Philly is their HQ and they choose to give those customers free unlimited. I myself refuse to give those ass hats any more money. Though we stay under 1TB.

I just know because of how much data we use and the bill always being the same. I think they might throttle it after 1TB though.
