USB Wifi adapter wont connect to home network

Tilar

i recently bought this https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-USB-WiFi-Adapter-PC/dp/B07V4R3QHW/ref=sr_1_12_sspa?crid=RZUNNB8PMQTI&keywords=usb+wireless+network+adapter&qid=1577743058&sprefix=%2Caps%2C631&sr=8-12-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExRVhNQTBXVlpHUjhYJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNTk3NjM2MVJXUDJESlY1TklNVCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMzUzMDU2MklHVzJPMEtPTlU4QSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX210ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= wifi adapter to replace my old tiny one which would net me around 50-100 ping in games making it unplayable. with this new one i can connect to my mobile hotspot perfectly fine but i cant connect to my xfinity router. i cant install a pcie wifi card because my rx 580 blocks the slot so im stuck to using this. any help with connecting or am i dead in the mud?

Which Wi-Fi standard does your mobile hotspot use and which one your xfinity router? The stick should be backwards compatible, but who knows. The Amazon page is a bit weak on technical details and has quite a bit of marketing babble (aside from broken English).

~edit: Does the adapter pick up any other Wi-Fi routers in the neighborhood (assuming there are others close by) and/or how far is your router? Maybe it works if you get closer to it?

Remember to either quote or @mention others, so they are notified of your reply

When you say you can't connect what type of error do you get when you try?

I assume the network isn't even showing up (OP: Is it a hidden SSID?)

What do you see when you enter this on the command line:

netsh wlan show interfaces

You could try the driver direct from Realtek, sometimes the vendor supplied or Windows Update driver can be buggy. https://www.realtek.com/en/component/zoo/category/rtl8812bu-software

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

You did enter the correct password? Because that's the same message you get when you enter an incorrect key.

Have you tried restarting the Xfinity gateway? Even if every thing else works, I have seen instances that restarting your wireless network can sometimes help devcies that are having issues.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
