Will a mid-tier GPU get me to 75fps at Ultra on 1080p?

LordMacrae

My current set up is as follows:

Core i7 3770

8GB 1866MHz RAM (2x4gb)

480 SSD

700 Aerocool PSU 80 Bronze

75Hz Freesync AOC monitor

I'm thinking of getting an RX590, will this allow me to get a solid 75fps at Very High / Ultra settings at 1080p? My budget for a GPU is £200. Is the 5500XT likely to be under that? I think it's probably best to stick to AMD because of my freesync monitor.

The games I'm intersted in are:

  • The Outer Worlds
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order
  • Destiny 2
  • Overwatch

CPU - Core i7 4770 RAM - 16GB DDR3 1600MHz GPU - XFX RX 470 4GB

SSD - 1TB TCSUNBOW X3 PSU - 500W Aerocool Integrator

Cyberpunk is said to be pretty damn demanding so probably not. Otherwise, high/ultra with a 590 should be fairly easy for the other titles, especially overwatch.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

The CPU is going to be a bottleneck for steady 75fps specially on such demanding games you're looking to play.

Furthermore the RX 590 probably can do it with fine tuning of the settings but certainly not on ultra.

It is overclocked rx 580 with the same  cooler, so it runs hotter and louder. Think gettin 1660 or used 1070, 1070ti or 1080 for that price point. But if you want to buy amd buy rx 580 8gb and sart saving for new cpu

It indeed heavily depends on the games, I can do Tekken 7 (a so called current gen fighter)  at 1440p down sampled to 1080p at ultra at 60fps no sweat.

I could even do this with a 2200G (maybe not with everything at ultra lol)

But something like Resident Evil 2? Uhh... No way in hell at ultra / 60fps...

Medium / high / 4GB max textures then sure yes (and only because of my CPU,  with my old CPU that would not have been impossible)

As some people have mentioned, your kind of at the point where your CPU is really going to be holding you back on the more demanding titles.  Your kind of at the point where you need to be looking at an entire system upgrade, rather than just slapping in a new GPU and that being able to correct your problems.

To give you an example, Red Dead Redemption 2, which is the most demanding title out right now and probably as close to as demanding as I expect Cyberpunk 2077 to be, only gets 53 fps at 1080p on High settings with a RX590 using a 9900K OC'ed to 5.0 ghz.  Your processor is no where near a I7-9900K OC'ed to 5.0 ghz so a RX590 isn't going to even come close to this on your system, probably closer to 30-40 fps to be honest.

However, upgrading the entire system is easier than it sounds when the money isn't there to perform that upgrade.   That being the case, I think your best bet would be to go ahead and go for the RX 590 (or wait and see what the 5500 pricing is going to be) and dial back your expectations to medium/high setting on the most demanding titles.  I think if you set your expectation to medium settings on Cyberpunk 2077, that you should be able to hit that magic 60 fps minimum for smooth game play, with that rig.

An overclocked RX580 8GB should easily net you ~60 fps (probably fairly close to 75) in most games on med to high settings. However, your CPU will probably start bottlenecking any GPU that is more powerful. I doubt you'd be able to get anywhere near 75 fps on ultra though...

If you want ultra settings @ 75 fps, I'd look at a 5700XT...however, again your CPU is going to bottleneck it pretty severely. Because of that, I'd be very surprised if you are able to achieve that frame rate on ultra settings.

As far as CPU, I'd look for at least a 6 core/12 thread like a R5 3600

Basically this will do all that, except 75fps,  even 60 is very questionable.

You kinda have the choice high settings or high frame rates but not both,  in many titles.

What GPU do you currently have by the way?

I agree...An overclocked RX580 or stock RX590 will probably just barely be able to achieve 60 fps on ultra settings on most games at 1080p...it also is very questionable whether his CPU would be maxed out the entire time.

I currently don't have a GPU, I had an RX 460 a while back, but sold it when I built my "new" PC.

IMO, if you plan on keeping your current system awhile, I wouldn't get anything more powerful than a RX580 and wouldn't spend the extra on a RX590 (which like others have said is essentially an overclocked RX590)

Ah I see,  I was asking because I thought maybe a 590 wouldn't even be much of an upgrade for you,  but in that case it would make sense I guess.  You just have to kinda expect to be upgrading your other hardware soon as well,  especially for high settings / high framerates.
