Motherboard for Ryzen 5 3600

Hey LTT-ers,

I am thinking that a 3600 would be a good CPU to get, but what would a good motherboard be for it?

If i get the 3600, I won't have a lot of budget left for a motherboard.

I don't have a 2nd or 1st gen chip for updating BIOS, so I would need a board that is either OOTB compatible, or has BIOS flashback.

Possible options are

MSI PRO VDH MAX: £65

MSI B450M MORTAR (Max is same price so would go with that)

If I go with the mortar, I would have to drop my current choice of video card (1660 super) for a 580 like card. is it worth it?

Edit: if you have any suggestions for other boards then thats also good.

how about the MSI B450M Bazooka or the ASRock B450M Pro4, they are both budget friendly but still decent boards. Look for a sticker on the box which says Ryzen 3000 Ready. It may be the same SKU but boards that come out of the factory after ryzen 3rd gen was released mostly come with updated bios

Are you planning to overclock? If not you don't necessarily need a mortar. I have the Gaming Plus Max which is a solid board afaik, but it's difficult to recommend stuff to people who are not in your region since prices can vary wildly. Definitely wouldn't drop the budget for the video card, if it comes to that I'd wait a bit and save up so you can afford both the motherboard and the 1660 super.

if you post your full planned build and budget, we might be able to help reduce the cost enough to get a decent board

Thats a good idea, I'll look into it.

I already have storage, case and PSU, so here is the rest of it:

(Budget = £560)

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (£175)

Motherboard: -----

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 Gigs (3200mhz) (£63)

MSI Ventus XS OC 1660 Super (£220)

Cheap peripherals for  ~ £35

This leaves with ~ £65 for the motherboard

could probably save a bit switching to a 2600 over a 3600 as that would lower the cost there andd wouldnt bottleneck a 1660 much if not at all (to my knowledge)

or you could go this way as a cheap mouse and keyboard wont be £35 just make sure it has a sticker saying 3rd gen ready

Awesome, thank you!

i compared a gtx 1070 to a 1660 super like you wanted, and i found that it is 20ish pounds cheaper buying off ebay than buying new. but then again certain people dont like buying used hardware, i dont see an issue especially off of ebay when their buyer protection is a1
