Cooler for a i7 6700k

I am planning to build a pc for the internet only.

I am using my old i7 6700k with a GTX 1080. The motherboard is a ASUS Hero IX.

I have all the parts except a CPU cooler.

 

I usually use Noctua NH-D15 for my gaming builds but this CPU won't be overclocked.

My budget is around $50 US.

I mean, are you gonna sell your 1080? For just internet you dont really need it. Could buy a nice cooler with that money.

At this point in time I am not selling any cards.

i7 6700K at stock should be relatively easy to cool, especially if you undervolt it slightly.

 

Arctic Freezer 34? Can be had for about $30-$40. I expect that would be able to handle a stock 6700K without any issues. I have one in the closet that I bought as a backup for my current cooler, but I haven't had to use it yet so it's just sat there for a few months unused.

I had a Noctua NH-D15 as a spare but I gave it to my Son because his RGB ram would not hit under his DARK ROCK PRO.

The only thing I have lying around is old Intel stuff but I would have to be crazy to use that.

If you're literally just browsing with the system, the stock cooler is fine with the cpu undervolted.

It originally had a Intel tower cooler on it but the fins are dust magnets and even a fine layer would cause a throttle.  

 

I ended up ordering a Noctua NH-U14S. It uses a 140mm fan and I have one as a spare so if later on I add a more demanding CPU I can add more cooling to it.

To correct, U14S uses A15, 150mm fan with 120mm mounting holes. So if you want to mount another fan with included clips, it needs to have 120mm mounting holes. But on stock clocks it's already overkill cooler so probably no need for such.

(running U14S since 2013).

The spare is an A15. 

 

This computer will basically be my 2016 gaming build and even though I don't plan to use it for gaming I will use it for comparison testing. Like a dummy I forgot to save the folder that had all the screenshots of the bench tests I did with it when upgrading to a i7 8086k and Windows 10. 

I like to have this sort of info since the comments I make on forums about hardware are from my experience with it. 

 

It will also eventually become my 2018 build since it may get a i7 8086k along with a RTX 2080 ti in the future. 

 

So hopefully the U14S will handle my old gaming hardware for years to come.
