Upgrade i5 7600k to 2700X?

Bormus

So I have recently purchased a 144hz 1080p monitor for gaming and if I am only running games the i5 seems to perform well enough to keep frames high enough to be nice and smooth. However if I want to run anything on my 2nd monitor (Browser for twitch, youtube, etc) I get a pretty good amount of stuttering and frame rate dips.

With Microcenter currently offering the 2700x for $129, it has crossed my mind to upgrade to it and sell the i5 to recoup some of the costs for the new CPU/MOBO. Would this upgrade be worth it?

Side question, if I do upgrade to the Ryzen would I need to upgrade my ram as well?

Current specs:

i5 7600K @4.5ghz

Patriot Viper Elite 16gb 2666hz Ram

asus z270-p mobo

EVGA GTX 1080SC

4 cores 4 threads is the problem

the 2700x would be a good investment, the 2600 is the best bang for the buck in value right now but at $129 thats darn cheap!

2nd gen Ryzen 7 is the opposite of your i5, good at multitasking but not good at high frame rates. I dont think it's the best choice for you either

Don't use black font on this forum, lots of users have dark theme enable rendering reading the text impossible without selecting it.

I would replace the i5 7600K for a R5 3600 if it's not handling the level of multitasking you wish, this way you'll have enough now while also improving the gaming performance by better cores.

Price isn't that far off any ways.

that's probably not your CPU, it's a known problem with nvidia drivers. If you have something running at 60 fps on your secondary screen, the refresh rate on your 144Hz monitor drops like crazy. You can mitigate it by disabling hardware acceleration in chrome, but I usually have to just keep any youtube vids from playing at 60 fps. Try selecting 480p quality on the youtube vids and see if that changes anything.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Another LGA1151-1 user, I must recommend this guide to you ?.

You should be OK with up to an 8 core/8 thread CPU with it.

I don't know that i want to go through the headache of Bios wiping/flashing but will definitely look into it.

Multitasking while gaming is laughable.  You're not playing a game and watching YouTube at the same time.  I know this,  because i laughed at my son dying all the time while looking at the other screen.  I ended up taking away his 2nd monitor cause he spent more time watching idiots than realizing he was camping. Also watching other people play games is lqme and of you did that as a kid.  Im sorry you were treated that way. You should have been handed a Controller.

Thanks for the highly in depth and helpful post. I always forget that other peoples gaming/life experiences are how mine should be.

In all seriousness I play games where there are pauses in gameplay that I am waiting for that I like to watch things during.  For example CSGO if I die very early in a round.

Are you using Google chrome? 16 gigs should be plenty.  Your cpu world speed is faster than my 4771, but my i7 has the hypertheading. Some would say ht isnt great for games, and yes some games are stuttery when i first load up. All i can say is i would not upgrade.  Ive had people tell me to stop using dual monitor if i want the performance i hear about.
