USB 3.0 thumb drive extremely hot

KhorCS

Well I thought it was an isolated incident when my first sandisk usb 3.0 thumb drive was running extremely hot and I didn't put much thought into it. Then I noticed, 2 more USB 3.0 thumb drives from sandisk was running really hot as well. Bear in mind that all 3 sandisk usbs are different models.

My questions are

- Is this common among every USB 3.0 thumb drive or is sandisk that awful at making USBs?

- any suggestions on what brands / models of USB 3.0 thumb drives that aren't hot when in use? (if any)

PS: Also noticed that my USB 2.0 sandisk cruiser blade is bone cold when I use it.

Its normal for a USB 3 drive to get hot after writing. The hottest drive I have is sandisk. I think the model is called ultrafit.

But they are hot even when I'm not writing onto it, like hot when it's just plugged it without being used

that could be weird but also it doesnt matter till they fail i guess lol not like its a harddrive, yaknow? it could also be just that your operating system looking at the usb storage is just heating the storage up because its "in use"

if theyre all like that i guess its just sandisks way, usb flash are a little more durable than you think but also maybe consider unplugging while not in use to extend their life

It's pretty normal especially for smaller ones.

It's also probably absorbing heat through the USB slot even if you aren't actively writing to it, unless windows is randomly writing to it.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Size matters for heat. So if it's small heat will have greater impact on the surrounding surface. Plastic material matters too but the main reason propably is that Usb 3.0 is more power hungry as it uses - if i remember correctly 900mA- and the usb 2 is using almost half. So the temp is sure to be more than a usb's 2.0 just from this fact.

Does it do the same thing in a different USB port?

However, it is normal for them to get warm. I'm guessing your definition of extremely hot isn't really that hot ?

Most of my flashdrives are sandisk and most of them get quite warm, but most of my non sandisk ones also get to about the same temperature.

It's normal.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Is it one of these?

If so, I can confirm that's pretty much normal.  I experience it with mine as well and many reviews mention it as well.  As for other drives, the harder they work, and the smaller they are, the more this will be noticeable, so some heat is to be expected, but if a larger drive got as hot as these do I would find it odd.

You should not worry until your computer catch fire. All flash memories become "warm" during use.

My Samsung Bar 128GB flash drive merely gets warm under extended use. Reading video files for a few hours actually seems to get it more warm than writing multiple GBs to it.
