I'm guessing it was the drops.  I wasnt able to test every update, but none of the ones I got caused an issue and I've not heard about this problem from others, which would have happened if it was a bug.

What are you on about? The current, 2nd-gen, Shield TV already does support 4K HDR. I actually have the first-gen Shield TV and even that one does!

I didn't remember about the K1 (original) having it, but I know the X1 one does have it...

I know first gen shield tablet (with K1 chip) supported 4K but I think it was only at 30 fps and probably no HDR either

Edit: I couldn't find specs of the tablet in terms of output ability, but I did find that it was in fact (as I recalled) HDMI 1.4, which inherently means it would have been 4K30 at most regardless of what the GPU was capable of.

Really don’t see the need anymore. With SteamLink being available on IOS my phone can play all my PC games at home. Then while I’m out and about most AAA titles are now on mobile anyways. Civ, CoD, Fortnite, Minecraft, and GTA. They all play great too

Yeah I know they're different, although on the topic their naming is terrible.  I think the shield TV used the x1 from the start but I could be wrong

Refresh the Shield Portable line.. that's the only shield device I've ever had any interest in. And they discontinued it after 1 product like 5 plus years ago.

I've had a shield tablet for over 3yrs, and I picked up my mum one too after her old one broke... At the time you simply couldn't buy a better tablet in the price range... and even though I don't use it for gaming. I couldn't imagine having any other tablet... Especially as it's not full of bloat like other tablets.

 

I've been hoping for a new one, so I'm really crossing my fingers that the rumours are true... and that it's not going to suddenly cost a lot more than the old one did.

 

I've also got the 2nd gen Shield TV box that I picked up almost 2yrs ago on sale before xmas... and I use that ALL the time. In fact I've stopped using my mediaserver as a mediacentre and switched to the android Emby app (I have a lifetime sub as I used to help test it back when it was called Video Browser, and before it became MediaBrowser and then Emby, and in some ways it's better than Plex and in others it's not... but Plex is expensive, Emby costs me nothing anymore)... and of course I use Kodi with a range of add-ons.

 

I'd consider getting another Shield TV for the lounge  too... I've been meaning to upgrade the 40" 1080p smart TV (2014 Samsung Series 6) to a 55-60" 4K one as I upgraded my bedroom TV to a 50" 4K HDR one and it's great... aside from the fact the Shield doesn't do HDR. So let's hope the new one does.

Which version... the original one was recalled and updated in late 2015. So the replacement is the K1 and that's had zero problems. It's a great tablet and it got updated through at least 5 versions of Android to 8 which for a mobile device is almost unheard of considering most rarely get much in the way of updates at all... and if you are lucky you'll get a single update to a newer android version and that's it... Look at how bad they are at pushing security updates... it takes 6 months or more for most of them.

 

This is why I'll get another shield tablet, because my experience has been excellent... and I'm more of an AMD video card user because VFM matters more to me and the shield K1 tablet was fantastic value for money... The Shield TV not so much compared to other android tv boxes out there... but again... the sheer number of updates it gets makes that a worthwhile purchase too.

 

It's odd that I kinda dislike nVidia because of the crap they pull with their graphics cards... and If I'm honest, I never really forgave them for what they did to us 3DFX users after they stripped the company of it's IP and screwed it's users after promising driver updates for things like the Voodoo 5500 and then reneging on it... That SLI thing nVidia is so known for... that's what they wanted from 3DFX. Once they had it.. fuck the users.

 

So given that level of dislike... I love their Shield line of stuff... go figure.

That's where I got it wrong. Thanks you two (Ryan_Vickers and WeteCatf) for calling me out on it. Indeed, the 2017 variant was just of smaller size than the 2015 variant, and that's about it.

If only they would make another Shield portable. That thing was awesome, and I bet one with refreshed hardware and a high refresh rate screen would do well.
