Embers of illeniel. A VERY small (as in unknown) series of books. The first 5 were in a series called "Mageborn." Mageborn is a typical medieval mage book that dabbles religion. The first two books are near-unreadable but the fourth and fifth are spectacular if you can push yourself to them. Embers of illeniel is a marvellously

Pre-quel that is about the protagonist's ancestor. Humanity lived as slaves to the She'Har, a race of dimension-hopping elvenlike creatures that mature into trees. Embers of illeniel has amazingly deep characters. The protagonist is a farm boy who becomes cruel and violent from 10 years as a magical gladiator. I can't say much more without ruining the story, but I can't sing enough praise for Embers. And I can recommend mageborn if you can stomach the first few books.

Anyone here read Sherlock Holmes? I have this version (and began reading it about a week ago) and I have to say it is the most wonderful version I have come across yet. It has captivated me from page 1!
