Which version of Windows to choose

I am looking to rebuild my HTPC soon and I don't know which OS I should choose. The machine has a Core i5-4430, 8GB RAM, Radeon HD 6870 (this can change, I have a couple other cards I can use, or I can use the integrated graphics), 1TB HDD and a 2TB HDD. The OS will be installed on the 1TB drive (a WD Blue). I know I should use an SSD, but I don't have any spare drives. This machine will also be on 24/7 as my Plex server. I am considering using Windows Server 2019, but I don't know if I should go for 2012 R2 or 2016 instead. Any insight? Thanks.

I would not worry about getting an SSD for the OS if its going to be on 24/7. imo.

At this point my recommendation would be price, server licenses are not cheap, 2012 R2 is still fairly relevant. But then again I have not recent experience with server OS so I might be the best one to recommend.

I probably should have added that I don't care about price. I run evaluation copies from Microsoft (180 days), and after that I either reinstall or just deal with having a non-activated copy of Windows.

Windows 10 LTSC gets my vote, I run it on everything.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

That sounds interesting. Any ideas on how the performance is on a mechanical drive? I haven't had great experiences with Windows 10 on mechanical drives in the past.

How do you get an enterprise key?

I can only see option to buy home/pro/workstation, but not enterprise.

 

I currently run the school provided enterprise key, but when it runs out i want to replace it with my own, not win 10 pro.

Same as all Windows 10, I can't really speak to it as I run SSD's in all my systems. I have never had issues with W10 on mechanical drives, however.

All I have noticed is the game bar being gone, which is a blessing IMO.

So after thinking about it, I decided to use Windows 10 Pro for Workstations. I have had good luck in the past with it, so I have decided to give it a go on this system and see how it does.

Ubuntu Linux. Its what I use for my Plex server. Who know what? It doesnt randomly restart like Windows 10 did, when Im trying to record a show. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
