Hola, boiz.

I'm about to switch from fm1 a8-3870 CPU to fx-6300 cpu am3 mobo. Yet benchmarks tell they kinda same.

Also xor may not even be great advantage over usual a8  performance. Seems legit update imo.

Just wanna get decent home pc to launch rimworld from time to time and do web research. CPU and mobo are only things I'm going to swap, got 400w PSU, some old gfx (rad HD 6500) to change later on. Gotta grab dual ddr3 for new build.

Any am3 socket issues? Any advice on mobo?

Does fx have any speed advantage over a8?

Yes the 6300 is a ton faster than the A8.

However, Ryzen prices are pretty great right now. A 2200G in a cheap B450 motherboard and 8GB DDR4 puts that setup to shame, much less fan noise due to less hear output, more modern performance, etc. What are you spending on the 6300 and am3 motherboard?

FX 6300 is AM3+, double check if you're actually getting an AM3 or AM3+ board, some AM3 boards do support AM3+ chips too.

But otherwise a cheap AM4 board and Athlon may work better, but you would need new RAM for that too.. so it's kind of difficult to say what is the best plan with upgrading on a tight budget.

Sadly it seems like LGA 1150 boards are not that cheap second hand either, so that's not much of an option..

But maybe you can get lucky on someone selling their first gen Ryzen kit for not much. Something like a 1500x would be a nice upgrade.

With a second hand recommendation you're really dependent on the market you're in, so I could only give inspiration on what to look for.

Like I shared in the link above, you can get some seriously better value. I wouldn't pay over $100 for an FX setup honestly.

AM3+ works with all AM3 (non +) chips. No question about it.

But the simpler AM3 boards may not support all AM3+ boards (out of the box), since those chips are made later than the board. So for the motherboard you have chosen, go to the manufacturer website, find the 'Support' section and go to CPU support. Check if the CPU you want to use is supported.

It may be that a BIOS update is required, which makes things a bit more complicated.

Only in rare instances can you update the bios without a working CPU installed.

Having said that, Ryzen might just make more sense than going FX. In the 120 USD budget I don't think you can fit an entire board, cpu and ram:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 2200G 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($79.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($64.88 @ OutletPC)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $194.76
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-07-28 10:35 EDT-0400

Checking your second hand market might yield so e deals on a board and CPU, but I don't find it likely you can shave off 70 USD from this..

This setup also has a CPU with a GPU built-in for 720p to 1080p medium gaming, depending on the game.

Just checked local retail market. 107 to 110 for am3 Mobo and fx chip vs 200 to 230 for Zen build.

As much as I am an AMD fan, I find it somewhat difficult to recommend an Fx 6300 in this day and age. It's not bad for the right price, just... Lacking.

With a 2200G you are also upgrading your GPU, which kind of has it make sense to me. But I don't find significantly low prices on eBay for example.

Just out of curiosity, can you check if you can get a 2200g or 2400g for a competitive price on the second hand makret?

AMD FX topic

Back here.

Checked my local market for those as well, prices ain't that good. Assuming I would need to regear whole rig for ddr4 and 500W PSU as well, I found some quite decent solution to buy CPU on Ali for 33 bux (w/ shipment) and get mobo for another 50 bux as well. Lower than 100 bux, but I need to wait for delievery. Yeah, I know asus mobo isn't that cool, but meh. Ain't gotta mine crypto on it.

Plus, gotta order 500W PSU (23$) later on, since I suspect my native can get rly nasty even if TDP of FX would be lover than my A8 can chew. Plus 4 fans to support and dancing voltage on 12v line drives me crazy. Still no clue if it even matters.

I wanted to ask here about FX in case I missed anything. In advance I'll say that I'm going to jump onto AM4 socket later on.

Cheap, yeah.

PSU

Meh, I set up filter to show 4 pin CPU and 4 sata PSU's and it came up with none of your tier. Either that, or I would screw in +n sata power connectors manualy, if PS unit don't have at least 3 satas. Particularly here warranty is waste of time and money in case I'm not using M.2 drive or SSD+HDD build.

Generaly, budged tier you have there is mid-end for me in terms of money.

Found LogicPower's PSU. Is this anyhow decent to you?

If I get screwed PSU, i'm going to use soldering iron and blueprints for that thing just to fix it with spare parts and replace capacitors or whatever.

In case you might know about it, any clue why voltage spread around mobo in such a weird pattern? Is it common?
