Seasonic s12ii-520 for Gigabyte GTX 980 Ti Xtreme Gaming

strucky

Hey guys,

came here to ask for your advice. A friend of mine came and offered me his GPU (mentioned in the title) for a solid buck and I'm still like yeah and no... you know. My whole specs are:

Gigabyte A320M-S2H

Ryzen 5 1500X

8GB DDR4

Radeon RX 560 4GB

1 HDD, 1 SSD

1 92mm fan, 1 120mm fan

Seasonic s12ii-520

Xbox 360 controller plugged in permanently

USB headset ocassionally

(trying to list everything that consumes any power lol)

So as you can see a pretty budget build (more so with that RX560 right) and his offer got me really excited, that I could improve things a (big) bit.

My biggest worries are about the PSU with that 980 Ti. I know the recommended PSU is rated at 600W yet I don't know if that's with the super power Xtreme additional 8pin connected - which I wouldn't dare to use with that PSU. I would go just with the necessaries, 6pin & 8pin, no Xtreme OC really...

So guys, pretty please, any insight? Thanks a lot!

it'll work just fine

u can even overclock it as you wish with that 520W PSU, that PSU is from seasonic and they make good PSUs

edit: apparently it's not

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Wattage wise its fine. Its worth noting that the PSU isnt great. I would look at swapping it in the near future.

Hey there, hope you're doing well. By the sound of things, you'll be fine. The 8 pin connectors only provide up to 150w each so the GPU should roughly peak at 300w. considering your CPU is a low power draw chip too, I see no reason as to why the PSU would be inadequate for your build. Plus Seasonic seem to be a really good brand and have a killer warranty.

Edit:

Having a look at your model, it doesn't seem to be a great power supply, just meh. I'd recommend switching it out at some point. not urgently but do consider it.

perhaps the standard of good psu have increased over the past 3 years that i've been idle, but that particular unit was pretty decent back then

it is that bad in today's standard?

One should never judge PSUs by the label on the box.

Seasonic has a way overrated reputation in comparison to the PSUs they make.

That's not true, their higher-end ones are still great.

@strucky I wouldn't risk it. I had the 980Ti and with a 6700K it pulled up to 450W which is borderline for that PSU, it's decent but not that great by modern standards.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION

Yeah, don't worry, I double checked that PSU and made an edit showing that. They do make some great stuff but unfortunately this one doesn't live up to the name

I've read through a lot of stuff here and there on the internet and I got this impression, that it SHOULD be fine, yet I haven't beet entirely convinced. There's always that one guy that says it's not enough and that makes me waver. If you guys say it's okay, I believe you. ? I can return it anyway without any hassle if things don't go well - great friend indeed.

So thank you guys! I'm gonna be testing that tomorrow. Really looking forward to see how it improves my Kingdom Come Deliverance and The Witcher 3 experiences. ?

Back 7 years ago it was fine. Today its not really.

Its not bad, but id start looking at it being changed. Especially when it comes to higher powered cards.

Their prime line is good.

And stuff above the focus line.

Which is only really high end. Even then OCP is a tad sensetive on their prime line.

And on the focus its OCP is still broken in a worse way than it initially was.

It's either that 980 Ti + a new PSU potentially or a new 1660 Ti and no worries about the PSU. Daaamn

Wattage isnt the issue. So if you are getting a 1660ti i would still look at a new PSU.

Well they don't have much below that though, do they? (not counting those low-wattage units from 200 to 400W)

i think this is a bit over reacting, can i have further reading on issues of that PSU that would prompt such action to be taken?

perhaps from jonnyguru, or is that PSU review website also unreliable nowadays

How much is this 980 ti going to you for? Selling your current GPU will score you enough cash for a decent PSU, like a Corsair CX550

Also make sure you use @fasauceome or quote so people know you're responding to them

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Well if you tell me I could work with that combo 980ti+s12ii for some time I'd go for that a look for a better PSU maybe in the next month or two. ?

It could/should be fine running on that temporarily... I mean I could like play the games I mentioned without any (urgent) worries, right?

All I need is 'yes' and I'm sold. ?

I guess I am basically respoding to everyone here. Sorry anyway. ? New here and stuff, you know...

Should be about 250-280USD, he really doesn't know yet. Please note that I'm not from US, Canada but from Europe, Czech Republic... things might be priced a bit differently here, no Micro Center here etc.

They have the s12ii and iii.

Where the iii is interesting for office PCs since its really cheap.

Jonnyguru is good.

Its mostly in regard to the old PSU design and its group regulated. Its ok, but i wouldnt use it for more than office PCs and lower powerdraw hardware.

That is a lot for a 980ti. You could get a 1070 for that price used.

i can see how the 980ti might warrant a replacement

but the 1660ti? that's high wattage?

When i mean lower powerdraw. I mean systems with practically no GPUs.

on game-debate.com, first column being 1660Ti... it is kind of a (big) difference... that's why I was considering the 1660Ti as ehm a lesser evil for me atm ? but also a bit pricier - like around 80USD more then the friends 980Ti
