If you want Windows, Windows 10 is your only option.

Uncle Billy has invaded your rig.  Windows 7 is a old hag.  WIn10 was stupid in the beginning.  But with major update releases every 6 months and the use of open shell so you have a windows 7 start menu changed that.  Put WIn10 on usb stick with media creation tool and install that mofu and don't look back.

well i can tell you how I did Windows 8.1 on my Ryzen, that was to install Windows in an older machine and transfer the drive over. not sure that will work for 7 though.

That will give a instant BSOD.  But on Windows 10 you can change mobo cpu and ram and it will boot up and prepare devices and all that jazz and Windows will boot up.  People have claimed this works, I personally have not done it.

Windows 7 is losing all support at the end of the year (Jan 2020). Unless you want your computer to have multiple security flaws that will not be fixed I highly suggest you stay away from it for a new build.

Why would you install win7? I had far less problems with 10 than with any other previous win-versions. I would not go back to seven.

Life is really challenging. I don't always suceed: )

You simply cant get it to work it because there arent any drivers for it. Everything after Lake series CPUs are a big pain in the butt if you want W7.

It works for Win7.

Wrong. There are multiple hurdles to overcome, but it often works. 1st is having the ability to boot - use SATA without raid for best chance. 2nd is getting USB drivers on it. Pre-load the installer onto the drive, and if mobo allows, use PS2 mouse to do the install as that doesn't need drivers. It may be possible to configure the installer to auto-run without prompts but that's beyond my motivation. I have heard of it being used.

It's far better as a benchmarking OS, where security doesn't matter either.

Note OP is lucky with Z370 as there does exist Win7 USB drivers for that. There are no USB drivers for Z390 though, so if you wanted to go that route, you'd have to use a PCIe USB card. Yeah, I've been there. I've got the same battle to do for the Ryzen 3700X later... had enough win10 quirks.

Especially the fact you can get open shell ,, It will put your WIndows 7 start menu and its free app.  I couldn't use Windows 10 without the WIn7 start menu cuz their new start menu is cool but gay at the same time.

It is not going to happen my friend.  Like the gurus above said you must go with WIndows 10 and then just use open shell which is free and puts a Windows 7 start menu so you will feel right at home.

I never attempted a Win7 install from scratch on anything newer than Z170. Most Z170 systems had a Win7 install mode to make it easier and that was the last Intel chipset MS supported with Win7. For anything newer than that, now I do a Win7 install on older Intel system, move the disk over and perform the actions described to make it functional. I've heard of people slipstreaming drivers and updates into the Win7 install media but can't be bothered with that myself.

Installing a decade old OS on new 2018 hardware will give bad results.  It is a cardinal sin to install a decade old OS on a 2019 1903 Winoz10 and what not.

When I went from Z77 + i7 3770k to a Z170 + i7 6700k, I changed two registery keys (forgot which, found it online though), and just popped it in... booted first time I believe. I did run into some issues, but some ended up being fixed by updating the bios, and I assume not having installed all drivers 5 years ago would help too. So if you have a second, older computer. install Windows 7 on the drive you're intending to use there, DON'T install any drivers, DO download the USB and Networking drivers and put them somewhere on the drive, flip those two registery swtiches, and when done pop the drive into your newer system. :) Good luck!

Regards, a fellow Windows 7 lover, who is still inconvenienced by many of Windows 10's flaws, but was practically forced to move. :/

EDIT: this is not what I did, but this might work too (perhaps better even): https://www.howtogeek.com/239815/why-cant-you-move-a-windows-installation-to-another-computer/
