Hi!

Today i installed my new Ryzen 3700x and with a new CPU i also got a new cooler, the Dark Rock Pro 4. I have used the Dark Rock Pro 3 before this one and i was very happy with it so my expectation was high. But i am really disappointed with the performance i am getting. Right now i am getting an idle temp of around 60c degrees for some reason (yes the fans are spinning). I am using Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste but i would be surprised if that would be the issue. I checked the mounting before i installed the board in my case and everything seemed fine.

Anyone got any idea why this might be happening?

Did you remove all the films and protective plastic before installing the cpu cooler, also try to play around with the bios and see if some auto overclocking thing is on because the new cpus and stuff arent exactly finewine.

Yes, i removed the plastic before i installed it! I do have to say that when i throw an aida64 stress test in the mix it levels at around 80c which was a surprise since with that kind of idle temp i expected it to just go up in smoke.

Then there might be some overclocking stuff that have to do with the idle temp. Also the cpu is "only" 80c but it could just be thermal throttling. What are your cpu's frequencies while in aida 64.

I'll run another test to see what kind if frequencies i get. Another strange thing: Aida's temp monitor gives a temp  of around 43c idle when i open it. Compared to the 60+ i get in Ryzen Master software and Hardwaremonitor.

Read the whole manual again, make sure any backplates are not flipped or rotated the wrong way, remove thermal paste and reapply, make sure the cooler is facing the right way, etc.

I will double check everything! Just to be sure i will also use the thermal compound that they give with the cooler

Is it screwed in tight enough?

I just pulled everything out of my cas and i installed the stock cooler that came with the processor. As you can see in the image i have attached i get 2 different temp readouts on Ryzen Master and AI Suite from asus. Around 60 idle in Ryzen Maste and around 48 idle in ai suite. I have no idea why this is since i did a clean windows 10 install

Update: I do not think it is the cooler. When i installed the AMD wraith Prism cooler i got much of the same results. But when i checked the temps in the BIOS i noticed those were much more reasonable. I just re-installed the Dark Rock Pro 4 with Arctic Silver and indeed, in the BIOS i get a much reasonable idle temp of around 38c. But when i check back in windows in Ryzen Master i get, again. Around 55c idle, i also get the same temps with Core Temp. I do have out of the case now and it doesn't feel remotely warm, at all. I am completely lost as what to do now. The air the cooler blows feels like a slight cool breeze.

Are load temps still ~80c?

Yeah they were, at least if i can believe core temp/Ryzen Master since AI suite showed temps that were lower than those. But i decided on returning the cooler and the mobo since i didn't want to deal with 2 separate repairs going on the same time since i tried everything (BIOS update/downgrades, windows reinstalls etc) to get it to work properly (i also had some issues with the fan controls on the mobo). I deiced to back to MSI since i always had good experiences with them (i went with the x570 pro carbon since that one came with a free MasterLiquid ML240R). My guess is i just got a bad board. Let's hope i have better luck with the new one. And i also got the AM4 mounting set for the Dark Rock Pro 3 i still have since i know for a fact that cooler has no issues.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just incase anyone is having this issue, for AM4.
I recently installed the Dark Rock Pro 4 and was getting load temp of 95c. Got 40c on idle.
Checked the heatsink and I was able to twist and move it a bit (while it was still on the board).
Seems like you have to over tighten the mounting screws and cause the AMD (plastic) spacer nuts (10 on the manual) to bulge out.
I did so and was am now getting 70c on full load with prime95 going. I'm still not sure if i can tighten it more but I'm also too worried about over-tightening it and having it possible crack the CPU. (or so I've heard it can happen) Also my idle temps are now 36c-39c. (on HWmonitor)
I'll continue to keep checking on it but the heatsink looks to be doing fine for now.

Edit: I'm using the x470 carbon pro with a 2700x and 32 gb 3200 16-18-18-36

Just keep in mind even if you get the cooler fixed the temps may read false temps, we are early in the zen2 processors so early bugs are to be expected plus a lot of applications still need to be configured for zen2.

I was getting like 60 degrees Celsius on idle despite proper cooler installation, after a BIOS update I now see more reasonable temps

I had a similar issue with my DRP4 and a Xeon 1650, I thought it was just because the IHS might have been shorter on my CPU. I ended up packing material (in my case 4 layers of masking tape) between the cross bracket and the mounting brackets. I've never used the DRP3 but I'm willing to bet that this is an issue because they changed the way it was mounted.

Even with me packing material behind it, I'm still not getting any better temps than my DR3 cooler even though I should be. My IHS is not flat, but it should not be this bad. I think because of the mounting method it doesn't pull all the edges down towards the CPU.

Currently using the DRP 3 with a MSI x570 Pro carbon board. And the problems i had before are gone, no issues with temp readouts. Ryzen master and hardware monitor show the same results. Idle goes anywhere from 45 to 39 (keeping in mind that was around the time it was pretty hot overhere) and under load it gets to 75.

Same CPU. Same cooler. About 5 minutes into Prime95 and the CPU - via ASRock "A-Tuning" - is reading 84C. CPU frequency is between 4000-4025MHz... And that's with every single fan in the system at full blast.

I'm surprised nobody in this thread mentioned how hot Ryzen 3k was idling with early drivers/bios in this thread yet. Even under water can see the odd temperature jump due to boost behaviors and 7nm heat concentration. On a side note, I noticed my own dark rock 4 pro was ever so slightly convex on the cold plate.
