Is the RTX 2070 a good purchase?

I am getting a 1440p 144hz monitor. I realize i wont be able to get all games up to 144 hz. But I would like to get Rainbow Six Siege and COD Zombies games up there. I also lay GTA V don't know how high I can get that. I would like to have all this on max settings. 

 

Anyway is the 2070 a good purchase for this or is there a better option from AMD or getting a last gen card?

1080Ti is a faster card, and can be had for the same or less IIRC.

Depends on the rest of the PC, which other options are available, and how much the other options cost.

Usually not because the RTX 2060 is really close to it for considerable less... either ways I'd refrain from purchasing this month since we have both AMD and nVidia bringing new GPUs to the market this late July

If you wait until after the AMD release, then they'll have the cards at $100 off or you can purchase the new "Super" cards.  Be careful w/the first gen. RTX cards due to their plethora of issues; many of which don't show themselves until months later.  It's a gamble.

 

The new cards might fix the issues, so you'll be able to wait for reviews and such to make a more informed decision.

I'm going to push back on this a little: Nvidia is doing something called "Super" but the specific details of that are just rumors, and the pricing on those rumored products is also a rumor. We will know what Nvidia is doing soon enough, since AMD's E3 presentation is in two days and Nvidia will likely make their move between then and Navi's launch sometime in July.

If they do release an updated version, then the price drops are goin to happen.  It happened w/the RTX to GTX cards and there wouldn't be any reason to purchase last-gen. RTX, if there's a newer version that's updated, faster and (theoretically) better; it's the only way they'll be able to get rid of old stock and I got my GTX 1070 TI when the RTX cards were announced.

 

They were still quite inflated in July 2018, but they did come down far more than they're now.
