12GB RAM or is 16 necessary?

I want to upgrade my nephew's pc and my brother's pc but since they both only have 2 memory slots I was wondering if gaming would be as good with 12 GB of ram as would be with 16 GB. I couldn't find much information about this so please keep the conjecture to a minimum. It would be convenient to just have to purchase one 16 GB kit in stead of 2. The memory are the same timings and there would be no conflict there, I just want to know how how important it is to have all 16 gigs. My best guess is not much more important. Thanks for any expert help

8G really is your absolute minimum anymore, 16 gigs is recommended but 12 gigs will also work.

It's better to have two sticks of same size, for best "dual channel" compatibility.

If you use 4+8 GB , some boards may not enable dual channel at all, others may do a "hybrid" mode where 4+4 is used as dual channel, and 4gb that's left works at lower performance (half the GB/s read/write)

No need to get kits, can have stick from different brands and different speeds, they'll work if they both support a common frequency

16Gb of RAM today is the must have.

You will notice the difference with lower capacity

i would recommend 16.. i mean ur getting 12, might aswell get 16. a few fps can be gained, aswell as some stutters i would think, also if you overclock your ram, u will get few more fps depending on system. i got 32 gig ram, i benchmarked heavily modded skyrim lotsa 4k textures etc and smackin up from 2400 mhz to 3200mhz gave me 6 fps more, wich i consider alot when taking to accord that i also ran enb. get 16 so ur on the safe side m8 :)

I've seen this cause incompatibilities in some boards, And it doesn't have to be a common frequency. It will step the other modules down the lowest speed module in the system.

this is an interesting aspect. as long as gaming is better than 8/almost as good as 16GB that's all i'm going for right now.

you didn't read the original post. i would only have to buy one 16 GB kit to make each pc have 12. so that means they both at least already have 4. buying two 16GB kits would be twice as much.

but i just read the rest of your comment and thanks for the knowledge man

12GB of Ram causes the Ram to either run in compatibility mode or in singlechannel mode, resulting in worse performance than 8GB.

dualchannel is more or less a must these days
