8700k overclocking preps. (Successful 5Ghz :D)

So I've finally  ordered a cooler (Dark Rock Pro 4) that should arrive today. I wanted to get some final preparation info before going into overclocking.

 

As far as I know, I can set x47 multiplier without touching the voltage. But I'd like to know what voltages I should expect to use for higher 4.8-5Ghz(if possible) overclock.

 

CPU isn't delided, so temps would probably still be high even under high end cooler. But they shouldn't be too bad.

I read somewhere that they advice starting at 1.28v and going up from there in 0.01v steps until stable after setting multiplier

So, at default settings, I get 4.7 turbo on all cores in Cinebench. Temps rise to low/mid 70s, voltage to around 1.325v. Score 1440.

 

I will try 4.8 at 1.32 and see what happens.

I've heard start at 1.20 and go up 0.01, but 1.28 is fine since I doubt 5GHz is doable in the low to mid 1.2's.

I'm currently at 4.8 1.32V. Temps are 80c under Cinebench. Score 1497. Will do more stress testing before going higher.

 

Although HWMonitor reports 1.27v during tests, so there is that.

This can be a reference, but this number is taken from a golden chip, expect higher voltage for a silicon loser chip.

@starcoaster @jstudrawa Success! 5Ghz style points achieved. Currently stable at 1.32V, I haven't tried lowering it yet, but at least I know it can do 5Ghz.

Very nice, man.  Now that you're at 5 on all cores, make sure to set your games to use all cores if possible to take advantage. ;)

I just click the auto oc button. Also used the option for the 5gz profile. Surprised all the stuff on here for a cheap board.

How do you do that?

Beside unparking cores and using ini tweaks on games that are well documented I don't know of a way.

You can add start up commands per game.  For example, Ark has a command to make it run on all cores.  I got a 10 fps bump from it, 80 to 90fps now.

My i7 8700k did not make 5ghz and having to live with it was not a good thing.

I have set High priority for CB, otherwise I get -100 points.

No, I will stay at 5. It crashes at 1.3V, stable at 1.31. I don't really want to pump any more voltage into it. I got fairly high overclock, I'm happy with it :D

I went to 5.1 on my i7 8086k but other than a better Cinebench single core score I did not get a performance gain over 5ghz.

Staying at 5ghz is a good choice.
