Should I upgrade poorly performing 8700k for 9700k?

I have a 8700k with poor thermals. With a 360 CLC AIO in push-pull with high end fans, I still have trouble volting over 1.34v. At that voltage, I'm occasionally hitting 81C/82C. As a result of a poorly performing processor, the NINE high-end fans I set up for intake and cooling along with my 360 CLC AIO are going to waste. I was wondering if, under those circumstances, I should grab a 9700k and hope it performs better thermally? I would like a near 5ghz overclock and have the cooling equipment to support it assuming a good chip. Let me know what you think!

Performance wise a 6-core with HT and an 8-core without HT would be VERY similar. Not worth it IMO. The 9700K would have slightly better single core performance but the 8700K would have slightly higer multi core performance. We're talking single digit percentages.

Unless you have money to throw out the window and really really want that 5GHz bragging right.

BTW what motherboard do you have?

Main rig: i7 8086K // EVGA Z370 Micro // 16GB Gskill TridentZ 3200Mhz CL14 // Sapphire Pulse RX 7800XT// a variety of noctua cooling // Corsair RM750x v2 //  Fractal Meshify C

Secondary rig: R5 3600 // MSI B450i Gaming Plus // 16GB Gskill FlareX 3200CL14 // MSI GTX 1080ti Gaming X // Cooler Master V650 // Fractal Meshify C

Audio setup: Audient iD4 // Adam A7X // Sennheiser HD 650 // Sennheiser HD 25-II // Audio Technica M50x // Sennheiser Momentum 4

if the 8700k is not delidded, the toothpaste adds about 20C to the temps, so 82 is quite good for 1.34v actually, as for performance the 8700k is basically the same as the 9700k, maybe only slightly slower in pure gaming.

you might already have a good chip (not enough info really, but i've had 2 people last year almost return 5.1 chips just because they weren't delidded....), so make sure first. If you do decide to return the 8700k, i'd suggest just swapping over to zen 2.

I would agree 82c is pretty good for 1.34 volt. I had a 120 mm AIO and I could only achieve a stable 4.8 gigahertz overclock at 1.29 volt with temperature is hitting 79 C. That was an i7 8700 K with a Maximus hero 10. I now have an I-9 9900 K with a z390 formula XI 5.1 gigahertz on all cores at 82 C with a 420 mm AIO alphacool ice bear 1.335v. If you really want to throw money out the window and upgrade do it the right way.

I think in your shoes I'd try delidding before buying another ticket in the silicon lottery.
