RTX 2060 vs RX 580 for Catia/Solidworks/NX

Beovy

I'm an engineering student and my current laptop can't really run any of the even basic models in NX and Solidworks. I will be doing nodal analysis in the future along with more complex assemblies and parts so I'm planning on building a new computer. I'm hoping this would last me a very long time; something I can use when I'm well versed as a full time engineer.

Originally I was going to pick up a new laptop with an eGPU, but it turned out to be way too pricey so I'd rather just build a new PC and do work from home.

My budget for the build is no more than $2000 CAD, I currently run everything on 1080p, however I do plan on picking up an affordable 4k monitor down the line. So far, the heart of my system will be an i7 9700k with 16 or 32gb of RAM.

Also to note, I do play some games, including LoL, CSGO, Fortnite, OW, Apex, basically anything mainstream and big in the esports scene. However, gaming performance is not a concern for me since I'll be playing all of those at 1080p anyway, and I know whichever card I pick, I'll get over 60fps (I don't mind tuning down the settings).

I also do work in photoshop and lightroom (hence why I plan on picking up a 4k monitor) and the occasionally work in premiere (just for fun, nothing professional).

The title only includes the RTX 2060 and RX 580, but I'm also open to any other potential cards. I was looking into quadros, but being I do plan on playing some games, I don't think that would be the best choice.

From what I've seen, the RX 580 seems to be the best option and also the cheapest. While price isn't really a concern, I'd like to spend less than $500 CAD on the GPU. I don't think getting an RTX 2070 for example would be much benefit to me.

Thank you in advance.

For reference,

I put this together quickly. Then I realized the RTX 2060 might not be the best card. Great gaming card but I wont need that much performance for the games play. Some SPECviewperf benchmarks I saw, the RX 580/590 destroyed most of the GTX and RTX cards, and it's cheaper, so now I'm conflicted. I just want a final answer since I'm not sure if VP benchmarks are even what I should be looking at for my use case.

I would go with the RTX 2060, not to "futureproof", but simply because CUDA will probably be more beneficial to you in the long run.

Several friends of mine that are still in University engineering programs use CUDA-friendly software often.

How about vega 56? Performs a tiny bit off the 2060 in games, but absolutely demolishes the rx 580/590 and 2060 in a lot of workstation stuff. And you get 8gb vram unlike on the 2060. It's the best of both worlds and it's cheaper than the 2060 too. And you get HBCC in case you run out of vram. It's the perfect workstation card.

These should give you an idea what to expect, it seems the RX 580 for your desired workload is the best pick between the two.

1070 is worse performing than the vega 56 is. Vega 56 is closing in on the 1070ti, if not on par. And vega demolishes the Pascal cards in Vulkan titles.

Sees RX 590 destroying a GTX 1080 Ti on the tasks you will use.

Decides to buy a GTX 1070 for whooping 450 Dollars....
